I'm just a back yard flier because I love watching my bird fly and know that that big flock up there will be back in my loft soon (if they make it past the BOP)wanting to be fed and watered.
I remember the first time I was in a loft( but we call it pigeon pens back then) my uncle had a bunch of some kind of pigeons. I don't know what kind because I was only like 5 or so. I loved looking at the little babies in the nest. Then he would turned them loose and right then I was hooked.
My dad got me a few pair back then but I wanted to see them fly so bad and bugged him so much to let them go, finally he gave in and I got to see them fly all right. Yep, they were like that Lavender Roller that got out a while ago. They just kept going and going.
Well that's my story about why I like pigeons and rollers put on such a show that's why I picked that breed.

I love my birds competition or not. But also competition brings out the best of you no matter what. If you have no competition you would still fly but not able to compare agains other flyers. And I think we will not improve as much with out competition.

Every time I go to fly's I learn and see the difference with my birds.

I am with Quick Spin. I have raised rollers for 32 years now and only been flying comp for 10 years. Comp will make you cull harder and in doing so your birds will get better. With or without comp I will always have rollers.

I'm a backward flyer and can't compete here so i don't really care about it,but don't think I don't train my birds like they going to compete I do cull hard ,fly hard, train hard.get up early every morning ,mess with the feed..but all and all thats for the love of my pigeons..In NY if I had to compete I would but here i can't but does that stop me from flying nope but if i had to put my birds away and stop flying because of BOP ..then thats a different story. good post..

I live in Sacramento, Ca and when I got back into rollers (3 years ago to be exact) I knew nothing of William H. Pensom, Birmingham rollers,So-So line or strain, and compitition. All I knew was rollers and that was it. One day my brother brought home a Capuchine(I think that's how you spell it) pigeon and I thought I should find a mate for him. Guess what, I ended up googling "Rollers" on the internet. Once a roller breeder, always a roller breeder. I tell my wife, "It's in my blood". I ended up letting that Capuchine go because it was beating the crap out of my squekers. Then, I bumped into Chor Vang (known him since teenage years) at a local Swap in Roseville, CA. My intention was to check out if there was any rollers for a good deal. I had already order 4 "Pensoms" from Scott Buttars and 4 "Bald heads". Unluckly, all the females flew away and I was desperate for females. Chor told me he flies in Comp and he gots some good squekers up for sales and I bought a few. He said they were from a strain called "Plona". I had no clue at the time and I cared less then met him again at his house, picked up some more squekers and breeders. I decided to google Plona and that's when I paid more and more attention to where my rollers originated from. then Chor Introduced me to Roller-Pigeon.com. Been reading posts here and there...learning little by little.

Before, all my birds were in an open loft and I had some 50+ rollers. Because of BOPS, I was limited to flying due to the fact that my old house was surrounded by 2 levees with trees everywhere so I couldn't fly my birds to their full potential.

Now I have moved, started fresh again, focusing on 5 pairs only and I will train them, fly them hard, and cull them hard and bred the best. I am determine to in-breed, line breed and study my rollers; keeping them close in their blood. Maybe in 2 more years, I might be able to sign up for comps...but for now, I will just learn my rollers and learn from everyone else.

this is my true Birmingham Roller story.

i am from england . ifly for pleasure first comps second .the good thing about comps is you have aoption to go and watch everybodys birds. you can see if the standerd of your dirds match wot is out there.or are you loft blind . without comps the standards we set for our birds would surely fall

I love pigeons and bred them for many years without competing.Competition is kind of something we do for comaraderie, and to feed our egos a bit.It does bring out the best & sometimes the worst in people! All in all i enjoy visiting my friends and seeing their birds fly just as much as any comp, but comp adds that little trigger of excitement that is......being able to say"Today i'm the best".
