I don't really expect to get an over whelming response but here goes anyway. I have a pair that I knew was getting ready to lay and the hen was on the nest a lot yesterday. Well today she was still laying on the nest but I could see there was no eggs yet. As I was changing the garlic water,(man my loft smells like an Italian restaurant)I noticed the cock had an egg stuck to his belly. I give them tons of mineral grit. What do you think? Maybe he just laid to hard on the egg or maybe too soon after she had laid it?

I think that happens to all of us a couple of times throughout! I do not think that will happen every time. :) ---------- Andrew

Thanks Andrew, This pair had 2 eggs a while ago but they didn't hatch. I hope the next one is good. This is when I need George's 3 egg laying hen.

Hey Bertie, here is what comes to my mind:
1: egg shell too soft due to calcium deficiency 2: too little nesting material 3: both cock and hen excited about egg - crammed into bowl and cracked it, fluids stuck to cockbird 4: just laid egg combined with fluids stuck to cockbird 5: combination of all the above ---------- FLY ON! Bert, If it is soft shell which is probaby the cause I find that such hens rareley staighten back out, you can get it better at times with lots of calcium . Myself I rely more on crushed Oyster shell than grit and is mostly calcium, and is dirt cheap, grit actually has very little oyster shell, myself I mix it and go heavy on the Oyster shell. I have a nice hen that will probably be going back in the air due to this same problem. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

Thanks guys for the advice. I do use a very good grit that has everything under the sun. Sterilized oyster shell, mollusk shell, sterilized egg shell, sea sand, charcoal, refined bone meal, calcium propionate, salt, potassium iodide, iron oxide, ferrous carbonate, copper sulfate, copper oxide, nickel sulfate, zinc sulfate, zinc oxide, magnesium oxide, manganous oxide, calcium phosphate, calcium carbonate, calcium periodate, cobalt carbonate, dicalcium phosphate. But I did notice them both in the nest a lot yesterday. Maybe he wanted to get into the nest on the eggs too bad. The also have a great nest with a pad underneith. I think it must be he was trying to get on the egg too soon or something. Thanks again I'll watch closely for the next one to come. Maybe I can see what's going on.

Bertie, Scott is exactly right, oyster shell is what they need, not fancy, just plain old calcium. Also, we can all agree to disagree, I don't disagree with everthing you have said, I don't agree with all of it either. The people on this site are all hard working honest and sincere as I believe you are, and that is enough. Your opinion is as valuable as any other, so stick around and fight for what you believe. Respect is won, fought for, never just given!

Here's what I'm trying...I sprinkle some cuttlebone powder on the feed...You have to scrape the cuttlebone to get powder....I have no complaint at all....It seem like its the best...But every one has their own opinion....
I have used oyster shell but some of my roller in the past are picky, sometime they will just poop on it or leave it alone...

Time to purchase oyster shells. I usually buy a bag of 20 lbs for 6 bucks. This would last me for three years. Adding gradually in with the pigeon grit (has some oyster shells all ready).

Thanks guys for you input. I'll order some Oyster shell now. That stuff I posted that I use was very expensive too. Figures, I would pick the wrong thing.
