Hey Spinnerball, with my family, when I want to intensify the roll, get larger breaks with a bit more frequency, I give them a 50/50 mix of wheat and milo.

Otherwise, when I just want to get and maintain them in flying condition, they get a regular pigeon mix like Kaytee.

For example, as I was conditioning my birds for our local fly this weekend, I was using a pigeon grain mix for last couple weeks, this week, they will get the 50/50 wheat and milo in an effort to kick them up a notch or two.

My birds get their quality from peas. Milo degrades it. Wheat makes them stiffer. Corn makes them roll down. White millet makes them fly higher, many times will make them more active and still keep quality to their roll.

My secret weapon has to be the peas I shoot them up with. Duh oh, I guess it is not a secret any more :)

P.S. From your description, it sounds like they are just going thru their normal learning curves. What is old to you? Old to me is logging in at least 2 years of air time. Mine usually don't start showing what they really are until a year and a half.

Rock,

It depends what you are after. Feed is just a tool. Just like pulling out the water, air time, etc.

I would start with straight wheat as your ground base and work from there. It takes about a week before you start to see any regular change. All tho, most feed will kick in on the 2nd day. Like if I had a fly (visitor), I would shoot them up with peas or millet two days prior to the release date.

Experiment what works for your birds. Different families will give different reactions to certain feeds. Just gotta pay attention when trying new things. I flew off many, many birds during my experimental days. I would suggest you pick the brains of original breeder.
