My friend who flys doneks had is 1st attack today he flew 2 birds and they went up to dots in the sky. He looked up and noticed a 3rd bird but because of the height he couldnt make it out. All of a sudden 2 birds started to dive and he realised it was a peregrine in pursuit it chased the donek all the way down 18 inches behind it till the donek crashed through some trees and the peregrine veered of. The donek out dived the peregrine all the way and was back in the shed 30 seconds later. Is the Peregrine falcon really the fastest animals on earth do the people no about these diving turkish breeds?

There has been so many times that I have witness a peregrine diving from dot after a roller. The only time it has got them is when the roller dives straight down. When they dive the Z pattern they get a little more chance of out flying the peregrine.

Ty the coopers probably could catch a Donek if they were circling but I wouldnt think they would be able to stand a chance if the Donek had some air under them and could settle into a dive. They flat get with it when they decide to dive. JMHO Joe

It gives me quite a rush to see my Doneks dive like that. They don't even need a peri chasing them to make 'em dive fast, and when they spiral dive they look for sure like lawn darts.Something to see when they pull out of it.Feed can and a dropper bird is what ya control 'em with.I like them Donek birds.

hi all,,noticed this thread about doneks,,,i have some and found them abit hard to get in the air,,,and if they land a house of two away they seem to stupid to come home,,,so now i have wutas,,,and macedonian doneks, called akarooks,,,,they sem natural flyers and they dive just as hard,i havent lost any to falcons yet,but i dont think the falcons can keep up,i mean, cant we all run faster if something scary is chasing us,,,cheers

Not if you are young and inexperienced, unfortunately. And yeah, they take some work to get them to fly alright.I box 'em up and ride my bike down the road a city block or so to let them out with a roller to get them up,then ride back quick to let the dropper out before the henery swoops in on them.Sometimes it is a race between the peri and me to see who can get there first. And it sure is trick to get a good shot on film of them diving.Haven't been able to yet.----------

I had a Coopers hawk take one of my Doneks...just as he was coming out of a dive the Coopers came out of the trees and met him in the air right over my head. Jay Yandle also got five of these birds when I did....he has lost four to Coopers. And you guys are right....they seem to be really stupid and clumsy birds in the loft, crashing and falling all the time. But those dives are awesome. The problem with flying and training them depends on the family....I had no trouble at all with these Turkish Doneks.

i dont mind at all,,,im near geelong in victoria ,in australia,,and im with you guys ,it is hard to video them,,i think you have to set up with a veiw of the sky and hope they sort of come in to it,,,even here the greeks admit that the greek donek can be a bit silly,,the macadonian ones are much better,,but the macodonian ones with the white beak is considered the best,,,like the black baldys in the greek ones,,im starting to train mine from a mobile box, just to show my roller mates,,,,cheers

Just wondering if they are suffering from the show syndrome in similar fashion to the Dual Purpose Roller.

Kenny,
I think there may be a problem in the fact that alot of these old Greek guys who have Doneks just don't fly their birds much prefering to see them pecking away on the grass like chickens. My experience has shown me they are best only flying a few minutes long enough to just get up to a height from which they can make a spectacular dive for the loft.Less time in the air means less chance for the peri to get up after them, and only fly at the most 3 at a time.

Hey Tapp,
Howsitgoin??You can put those chinese pigeon whistles on any flying breed.I've only had them on my racers so far and the trick is with those whistles is getting them tied on right so they don't fall off when they are flying over the croc swamp or anywhere they are impossible to find when they fall off while the birds are flying.
As far as the Doneks diving then going back up again, when you put the dropper bird out if they don't keep flapping around enough to attract the attention of the fliers they will dive and go back up some until you spook the dropper to fly again.Usually they are up like 3 or 4 minutes until they reach the height and the right angle to the loft then the dropper goes out and as soon as they see that dropper it is one straight spinning dive to the loft or at the least straight to your house roof, then in the loft. They REALLY follow the dropper bird.White fantails are best but I don't have any of them yet.I use the yb Doneks that aren't flying yet for droppers. They are fun for sure but yop need lots of time to train them.

Where did you get the whistles?
Been looking for them for a while.
Only ones I find are "collectible"ones.
