Pensom breed Birmingham rollers, and most if not all the rollers in the U.S, can trace its roots back to Pensom in some way or another. Any strain of Birmingham Roller can roll deep,if it was breed that way.

Each strain is developed to one's likings. Selection makes a family what they are. There are many branches in the Birmingham Roller breed. Get to know the true deffinition of what a Birmingham Roller is and you should do good no matter what family you choose.
There is only one breed called the Birmingham Roller in the air. All tho there are many strains.

Xueher, While it is true that most all the rollers of today can be traced back to Pensom family of birds, There is alot of history behind these birds and families. People see it differently most of the time. For instance some guys hate to hear that a guy says he has the Pensom birds today since he past on a long time ago. But the Pensom blood lines are still alive and well in some loft today. You hear of 514 or 272 exct. Pensom wanted the parrents not the 514 bird. That way he could produce more to his liking. You can find these blood lines in Borges, Kiser, Jay starly, Ken Easly, Ken Billings birds and a few others. Then there are names behind these birds also like McCully and and then names that had Pensom birds with Pensom like Plona and Leroy Smith exct. There are guys in Reno and Utah that keep these blood lines going with out mixing them with just any old roller out there. Even though the Jaconettes have some good birds in some lofts you would not want to cross an Jaconette with a Easley bird or Borges bird or you will degrss in qualtiy but improve in the jaconette birds. Some have said yea the Pensom birds roll fast but you have to wait five minutes to see one roll and stuff like that. But the bottom line is try and see birds fly and find out what family of birds they are from. Don't just look to the winner of the World Cup and say I want those kind, but go see them fly and travel and see some more. That is the best way to judge the birds then ask what family are they. Also it would be good to get the next book Tom Monsom writes on Pensom rollers. There is more writting than the two books about Pensom birds. Tony sells one of the Pensom books and it is one of the best if not the best book ever written. Buy it and read it several times. Anyway you can lose a blood line in these birds by constantly out crossing but you can develop a family with them also. But you can outcross if you get them from the same kind of guys who have the blood lines still going when you start out with a family of your own. I would say the best Pensom roller today (that blood line I am talking about) are not sold as Pedigree birds even though they have pedigrees. They are a proven family in the air and breeding loft of these men I mention. Then you have many other birds that are still down from pensoms birds but have changed hands many times and sold by many guys like the Higgins birds. If you like Jerry Higgins birds you are best to go to him for birds and not the 45 guys selling higgins birds around the country right! Same with any family or strain of rollers. Hope you get intention and hope I did not make this too confusing for you. Bill C
