I am no Pro so I am asking a serious question. I have seen many post in the past where a picture of a roller is posted and someone replies it looks like a "so-and-so" line/strain.

Probably because of my limited experiences with rollers, I can only tell a roller from the air or what line it is from the person I got the birds from.

I know there are fanciers in this hobby who has 10+ years of experiences in their resume and my question is: If the bird is not banded, performs exceptionally superb, how can one tell just by looking at the figure of the physical look of the bird that it is a "Jac", "Plona", "higgin", or whoever it may be strain?

I Have bred rollers from the same parents that sometimes, the nestmates doesn't have the same body figure.

Does one strain of rollers differ from another as far as physical looks? If I put 2 birds with the same body and head type with no bands in a swap meet for sale, and one is pure "so-and -so" line while the other is untraceable, will someone be able to pinpoint exactly what line that bird is? if so, how?

I would like some answers or feedbacks so I can evaluate my rollers better.

thanks.

Flo - Anyone who tells you that nonsense about and unbanded bird is just taking an educated guess! There are many fanciers that claim they know that this bird is that family or this family and it is cow manure. Unless they have DNA samples they are guessing. Now, if they say that the bird really looks like a Plona, Smith etc that is alright because strains do have characteristics that are the same but if they are dogmatic that they know the bird is this or that they are pulling your birth chain.
