Hey Tony, I remember you posted up some pictures of some smokers from your A team a while back. I remember you stated you were going to work towards getting some more depth in your ruby rollers (if I recall correctly), How is that venture going? Im liking what I see and havent heard anything but positive things about your family, keep it up. Hopefully one of these days ill have time and space to work with your family, hopefully the depth your working on will be established by then. You're an asset to this hobby Tony, both you and your wife.
Hey George how are those rubys your flying? ---------- Gary

Hey Gary, first, let me say I appreciate your kind words about Joni, she is a great partner, tireless and completely trusting of me in our decision to relocate from the “rat-race” in So Cal to the countryside of Missouri. If not for her cooperation and hard work, I could not do this.
As for me, I am having a BLAST! :-)
I have already gotten the deeper birds that I wanted. Some at about 40’ and a bit more, (I had one that I mentioned elsewhere that rolled over 200 feet and kept rolling on the ground like a Parlor {can you say roll down?}) but I don’t intend to produce large numbers of them or develop my Ruby line into a real deep rolling strain.
My reason for breeding rollers in the first place was not to win competitions, but to have a prized strain of rollers that represent the ideal, as I understand it and could be proud showing to others. If I were in this solely to win competition, I would most likely have bred them differently than what I did and currently do.
I seek to breed for a gene pool that is complete and balanced. Right now, a fancier with my strain will have the essential raw materials to breed toward whatever preference he has. If he wants birds that have the traits of competition birds he will be able to compete, if he wants deep performing rollers for his own enjoyment, he can do that too. It will be a matter of his recognizing and selecting the right traits and managing the birds appropriately.
I fly my birds not to win competitions(I started competing only to make some others happy), but to see what my matings are producing, since I keep only a small percentage of what I breed, my sampling is fairly small, but I usually get what I want out of them. It also leads me to logically conclude that I my breeders are producing a high percentage of quality offspring.
Being relatively bop-free most of my career, I have mostly been able to fly my core stock for 2 plus years and it has worked out well for me; although I am not opposed to pulling a bird after one year or stocking from the nest. I believe this can be done with good results when you have your own family of birds.
Thanks for asking and giving me a chance to talk about my Ruby Rollers! ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria
