I know that alot of guys breed the Reed and Higgins line of birds. My question is what is the difference between the two? To those who breed these line of birds, what line did they start from? Also, in your oppinion, what would be the better line (your oppinion) and why do you feel this way?

Bigwilly,
LoL on the input! Hey listen I'm not sure why the guys didn't respond to your question but for what its worth I'll give you my input. The Jerry Higgins ole line was the ole pure pensom stuff that was deep but not as frequent as he liked them to be. Jim Lippincott from Apple Valley and Jerry traded a few birds back in the day. In the late 70's Jerry made a few introductions through David Sanchez and Richard Espinoza. The birds he used were down from Joe Houghton's 5071/199 famous pair. The birds that Dave and Richard recieved back in the mid 70's were birds that came down through this pair or decendants of this pair. Keep in mind these birds were down from one of the greatest breeders of all time Mr Bruce Cooper of Kelso Washington. Bruce Cooper in the 50's and 60's was a household name. He was the reason the Northwest had so many great Birmingham rollers via his good friend Bill Pensom. Later in the late 80's Ron Kumro and Jerry exchanged a few birds to which it helped both of them in the process. Ron Kumro of coarse got his birds directly from Joe Houghton so in essence they were of the same makeup. Jerry's 923 cock bird is behind alot of birds floating around the entire country. Three generations behind this cock and you will find the 5071/199 pair on a certified pedigree.
The Jacs that are in abundance are birds that have the same makeup of the Houghtons, Jerry Lynns, and Perkins blood. Keep in mind each breeder that had had them post Richard Jacconette bred them to thier likings in cosmetics and aerial performances. Anotherwards the good the bad and the ugly!
Norm Reed and Jerry Higgins really have a compatible line of birds to some degree as Norm has used often birds from David Sanchez. One of Norms top pair was 778/991 not to many of those direct are in circulation however I know of a few around that are close and upfront. I can't really answer Norm's other side of his family but perhaps this will shed some light on answering your question. I beleive Jerry and Norm had made some suttle swaps over the years to help increase frequency in thier kits.

I guess if any one would know the two lines 1220 and 0016 it would be Jerry.

and Efren posted a email from Jerry that said 1220 couldnt hold a candle or light to 0016 .

I would have to take Jerry word since he knows both Birds

George,

Jerry and I were actually talking about this on Monday when I was over his house checking out his spinners do their thing in the air. He reconfirmed that his family now is much better than the one he had before. I've never seen his older kit but the kit he has going now is sure a sight. And to think he stated that this was just a kit of left overs...

Efren
I knew this a long time ago , thats why I dumped my old family of old school Pensoms and got the new stuff.

I talked to a guy on a fly one time and he was a competetion
Flyer years ago and still has a pure family of Bob Scotts , not some guy that just has had Birds for a Long time and
he told me the birds of the past could never beat the Birds from the newer Reed , Higgins,J. Smith, Ibarra , Parker, Duncun, London, Steve Smith, Wilie Wright ( same Family Birds.

And this was a guy who won several flys , so he knows what good Birds are.

The Big difference is the % of good Birds that are bred ,instead of one or two good Birds a year these Family's produce the good birds by the dozens.also they like to roll ,

Most will never admit it because they have to much time and money invested in thier birds to just get rid of them.

Later Efren

Ive had my Bob scott birds for ever,Last year my Friend Jose Navarro, cousin to Juan, bought 6 pairs from jerry Higgins,he was a homer guy but wanted to get into rollers.
He bred a round but found no time to fly them,he gave me 14 squeekers from his Higgins birds,
I flew them in a kit with 6 of my birds to make 20.
I cant say they where better or worse, My opinion and my opinion only, the birds did roll verry good, some where better than some of my Scott stuff, but some of my Scott stuff was better than some of those.Overall they where the same in my loft and the way i fly them, To my surprize they took a little longer to come in to the roll.My Bob Scott stuff started at about 3 months, when the others took about 5 to 6,
I did stock 6 of those so ill see this year what they produce.
I dont care what family thet are as long as i get 20 good birds for comp day thats all that matters.
I think some people got a bad start with one family and by the time they figure it out theve gone through a few and by the time they got it down they think thats the right family.
I think many familys will work good you just have to know what your doing. Hector Coya
