Hey guys, I have been looking around and have seen that most guys use training cages to train their birds. Now Im gonna tell u the method (or a trick) passed on to me by my grandfather. WHEN U GET READY TO TRAIN I USUALY USE A CAGE TO TRAP TRAIN BUT FOR THE REST I USE "SCOTCH TAPE" THATS RIGHT FREAKIN TAPE. WHAT I DO IS I TAPE FIRST FEW PRIMARY FEATHERS ON ONE WING ONLY THAT WAY THE BIRDS CAN FLY BUT JUST A FEW FEET. THAN JUST KICK THEM OUT AND IN ABOUT A WEEK OR SO THEY ARE HOMED IN TO THAT KIT BOX THAT U CAN START FLYING THEM FREELY. Hope this helps .....

I use to do that when I purchase birds and try to fly them or when I stray a bird in. Now if you buy a bird is for stock not to fly them. If I stray in a bird I try to lacated the owner if banded if not I would not even try to catch it.

That's a old trick most of us when kids use to do. Now we do breed are own so no need to do that any more.

LIke trying to catch a roller that had a band. wow

I use to get a string and do a small knot not too tight but almost look like cicle so when they step inside I would pull the string and grab their feet.

Also the one with a cage and the food inside and when they go inside you pull the string tide to the stick holding the box from falling down.

Man brings back the old memories from my childhood. Those were some good old days. I remember when we mooved to the city and couldnt keep pigeons so Id go to the park and feed the commies. There was this red and white bird that I chased for ever and when I cought it I felt like the world was mine. LOL
PS
I got hit by a car chasing pigeons througout the street one time. hahaha

I'll do that when I have kit that is getting older and haven't had time to get them out and they are strong, but just for a couple of days or so.

I remember when roll downs were in, if your bird didn't roll all the way to the ground from a dot, you had nuthin.

I don't even use the training cage when training squeakers.Just put 'em on the landing board at about 22 days and all is good.Just don't take your eyes off them for a minute(BOP) or let them go to the ground(bad habit).

tip for settling pigeons is get some soap and get it all latherd up and put it on the fethers and that keep them down.

good ideas to catch that stray or settle the new birds you want to fly.
Especially for the newbies, like me.

JDA I think you have that on the wrong post, that should be in the post How Do You Call Your Birds and that 12GA are for the one's that don't come. Dennis

I use a rabbit cage to home in squeakers. I move it around the yard in various places so they get different views of the loft.
What reaaaally gets em going is when I feed the other two kits and set the cage in the door of the loft so they have to watch the kits eat. They are usually pretty torn up and ready for some grub by the time it is their turn.
I have found the key element is for them to know how to get in the loft. They recognise certain things in the yard but its a completely different perspective when the birds are in the air. Look at your house on google earth. Thats what the birds see.

That will not work here at my place given my ever present resident cooper hawk. One idea is to use a painters tape instead of that scotch tape though. It might be less feather damage. I use similar settling technique that Velo99 uses.
