Here's a brief description of the standard for the Sporting Pigeon(written by Levy in 1965).Another performing BREED.The modern standard follows very similar lines.
origin:Spain. This pouter is the modern version of the old varieties of Spanish Thief Pouters.Created after the Spanish civil war(1939) from crosses of the old type Laudina Thief Pouter with Homers and perhaps other good flyers. description:It is a Thief Pouter used for flying and pitching strays. It has a homer like head, upright station, medium crop, carried high and short legs.It is said to be lively and active, restless, very tame, and fearless. size:Medium, average weight about 12 ounces. ornaments:It is plain headed and clean legged. colors:All colors are permited, but its breeders are partial to blue and smoky blue.Color is immaterial.Nothing counts but its performance. comment:Brage says that as with Homers, there are many strains and types of this BREED to be found in Spain today!

Dang Luis, you are the straw man aren't you? LOL You remind me of me when I was younger when I thought I had to WIN every debate and so would clutch at every straw that I thought supported my position.
Hang in there bud, it will come to you too. ;-) ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

Hi Luis, I've been following this debate/free for all.. with some interest and a tinge of feeling that I should contribute.. since I now know that some of what you are arguing about is based on the fact that you have the qualmond gene from my family. This is an argument that will never be resolved since there will always be people with different families having different traits. Other people's opinions shouldn't be so important.. They're like body parts.. everybody has them. And some people are not shy about exposing themselves.. right or wrong, in public. Also some people will be offended by what they see or hear and others will not... Gomez

Ok Luis, I'll step up and take a little heat... In my opinion, the Birmingham Roller, like every other breed of animal, is a constantly evolving creature. There is simply no way of perfectly preserving the breed as it supposedly was at any time in it's past. The true Birmingham roller was probably the birds of a few individuals who produced their birds to the high standard that Penson described. Were these birds pure..?? Probably no more than the birds we have today.. The 'pure" Birmingham Roller is a myth.. Pensom set the bar high.. based on an arial standard. As far as I know he didn't bicker around about a birds pedigree. There have been crosses made from other breeds in the somewhat recent past... 30 years or so ago.. My opinion of those birds at the time was that they were junk.. and I still think that they were junk... BUT..in the hands of dedicated breeders, those opal lace, white bars, etc, may have well produced outstanding spinners by the present time.. So if the bird has an unusual color, which reveals that there had been some non traditional breeding in its ancestry, some people will automatically reject it. But there are others that will welcome the variety. In my opinion, color has nothing to do with roll.... Plain and simple... Gomez

It is absolutely amazing, how after all the things that were posted on this site about the subject, we are back to square one. Absolutely mind bogling. It's almost as if everyone is ignoring the facts. Have fun girls.

Milo, Which colore are you talking about...EXACTLY...? I don't breed for color either... so I'm kind of like you... But I do have qualmond... and when I breed one. I almost always breed them to dark checks... but what colors are the impure colors? Gomez

Hector he told me a few years ago when he was here judging state that he was only going to keep a few pairs of such birds due to it was setting him back. Randy has some top self birds on the property that aren't mutts also, I believe 272 stuff, but I'm sure there were a few mutts in what ever team you saw so we will give them all the credit. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott
