Hey All, I noticed that one of my holdover cocks gains momentum when it spins and instead of losing or moving backward, comes out forward of it's starting point. It is in the 20' range, very tight and fast. Could or would this be something to consider breeding for or is it just particular to this bird? Please, tell me what you think.
Thom I noticed a bird yesterday doing the same thing. He is a Fireball. He spins for one to two seconds but doesnt drop much and seems to keep traveling forward and not drop from the kit. I, personally would cull him from a comp kit. On mine there is no seperation from the kit for the judge to see. He will also drop most of the time from ten to thirty feet straight down. Since he is in my Fireball kit it is acceptable.
I had first thought you meant spinning over forward. That is an Oriental trait. Not all will do it but quite a few will and you kinda shake your head and think did I see what I thought I saw the first time you see it.
Sippi, This bird spins very hard and fast then right back to the kit. He was not flown for as long as I would have liked last year because of the preds. He is getting better all the time. My point was, that due to the fact he gains forward momentum his return to the kit seems faster, since the distance lost is less. Some of my birds spin straight down, some spin rearward, this bird spins in a normal fashion but forward in the spin. About as clear as mud, sorry.
Thom i have a hen in my a kit doing the same thing, almost at a 30 degree angle, some may not like it but i do she just balls it up that fast. ---------- Ty Vapor Trail Lofts
Sippi, I saw a Birmingham roller flip frontways once. It was a pure Pensom mbird too. Another guy saw the bird do it too and he asked me if I saw what he saw... We both couldn't believe our eyes. Gomez
Ty, I also think of it as a plus. Sippi, rarely have I ever watched a bird spin stright as an arrow down, so in my view almost all birds roll at some forward and backward angle.
You have seen my You-Tube clip of a bird that rolls up ward before falling down wards. That bird has excellent style and have become a key member in my competition team. Sad to say, he was one of the 3 that didn't return home yesterday from a snow induced over fly.
Thom, Like Sippi said, you gotta have that seperation from the kit with a vertical drop. He's not a comp bird yet but give it a chance to change before you pull him. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

Kel, I must not be making myself clear. The bird I'm talking about spins very hard and very fast and as he drops from the kit for 20', sometimes a little deeper the centrifugal force he generates causes the drop to go slightly past the vertical at approxamatly 30 degrees forward of where he started, this is the same as the bird Ty has. I can only see any bird that spins this hard and this fast as a good thing, but is it a trait that can be breed for? That was my question.
If your bird is any where near mine in performance, you should be in good shape with that bird. The bird I filmed not too long ago would thrust itself up ward before falling back down. Take a look and see if we are talking about the same thing.
Good news, received a phone call today to pick that M.I.A. up at a Yacht Club/Golf course. Hopefully when the weather warms up more, I can re film the bird to see if it is still rolling up before going down. Funny thing is, they told me that bird wasn't the first - actually one of many banded pigeons they have found. Most be a hot spot for lost pigeons. The bird is a little under the weather but should recover after a few days of rest and all he can eat feed.
To count - 2 still M.I.A. If I don't get a call back by tomorrow, they are goners.

P.S. Looks like I gonna get to use my another one of my Roller Post Cards :)
Thor, I flew my holdover cock with the kit this morning and looked to see if he was spinning upwards like yours. I could not say that he gains any altitude at the beginning of his spin but if he makes it through this season I think he will be a keeper. I could not find your video, would you provide a link or instructions on how to find it, please.
Thanks Thor, that is very nice, and you are absolutly correct, he gains altitude before leaving the kit, thats awsome! Mine spins just as hard but not upward like yours. Good luck with your upcoming fly!
That is as close to a forward spin as I have filmed. It was just some thing I noticed from him as he was coming into the roll. In the footage, the bird was smart enough to not commit into the roll. Shows control but bad example of what he could really do. Fast forward to now, a couple of months later, I would rate him as a 1.6 in quality.
