What has been your best trick to get a hen to lay in the kit pen?

I feel I have 2 that are at this stage. They have been dropping away from the team early - say at the 10 minute mark. With the recent over fly, I need all the remainning birds to be at the top of their game.

Any suggestions?

Thor

BEST way to GET them to lay????That's an odd one. That is the last thing I'd want in my kitbox.Feed them all they want Thor, and they'll lay eggs in there, but don't fly them or you'll end up with their guts hanging out their backside if they are any good spinners.

As long as you keep your kit birds on a strict diet and use wire floors you should not have any issues with hens getting eggy in the kit box. Not sure if the wire floor has as much to do with it as the diet because I have had hens get eggy in the kit box when they are locked up for the winter. I have never had a hen et eggy when I was training them and had them in comp condition. their body fat wont alow them to just like a world class female sprinter will go monthes or even years without a period because their body fat is so low. Thor, Assuming you want to divest them of any eggs they might have already. Try a few drops of cod-liver oil down the throat, won't hurt and it makes everything slick, also will help an old hen that has trouble laying.

Wire floors have nothing to do with it.If you overfeed kitbirds they will get eggy no matter what they have to stand on.I had a wife once that gave birth to my oldest son on a stretcher on the open car-deck of the Gabriola Ferry!!Didn't bother her and these are pigeons WE'RE talking about.LOL!----------

Makes sense. All tho, I can not afford to luxury to keep my birds in flying condition all the time over here. We had back to back snow storms for the past week and a half. That with freezing temps made it kind of hard not to feed up the fliers.

I think my hens are eggy. They sure act like it in the air.

Looks like I will need to take them out if this continues... I fly for the world cup on the 16th.

Thanks for the input guys,

Thor

P.S. I use wired floors - 1 x 1 :)
