Hi guys how common it's to find a young 2 year old cock not to fertile. I have one that I been trying to breed him but the eggs are not fertile. The hens are good as I bred them before and they laid eggs but they are not fertile.

I think sometimes meds can have a huge impact on a birds reproductive system and its ability to function properly. We need to be vigilant with this! Also, sometimes you just need to look at how a cock is mounting his hen. This can affect if the eggs are being fertilized or not.Giving them a little more time together can also help.If all else fails, there are pills to help with this.

I try him with two different hens, I just give him fertile tablet today to see if it helps him. I will try him one last time with a nother hen If not back to the kit he will go. Too bad as he is a good bird and a good producing backgroud.
I left him 2 months wich each hen. ---------- SALAS LOFT

Qucikspin, Are you breeding from IBP'S If so thier in itself lies the problem. Oh for those of you that don't know the abbreviation (Individual Breeding Pen's) If you have which most do wire floor in the cages you must put a small piece of 1/4 inch plywood about 8 inches in width and the width of your cage. This will give the hen support when she squats. Whats happening is the cock isn't swinging around the hen to copulate because the hen is balancing on the wire when he mounts her and dips her tail so no contact is being made. Also keep in mind that a breeder box or IBP has to be a minimum of 18 inches in height so they can move thier wings when copulating. Hope this helps.

Quickspin, I just saw your set up so obviously my suggestion doesn't warrant your circumstances. Another couple of things you can try is to use iodine in the water. Iodine helps in the fertility of the birds. Also you can coat your feed with wheat germ oil and this will help with fertility as well. Just put a few spoonfuls of it on the feed in a container and shake it up until the seeds have a luster to them. The birds will not take to it right away but they will adjust over time. It also finishes them off nicely for feather conditioning. Have you bred from this cock before? If not let him rear a set of youngsters and that will kick him in gear sometimes as well. I trust he wasn't on any strong antibiotics such as baytril before you paired him up. Just thinking out loud here.

I gave him a fertility tablet today and will give him one every day in till the hen laids the eggs. If this doesn't help I guess he is bad and will use him as a kit bird.
I will also try giving him the oil you said in the food.
Thanks ---------- SALAS LOFT

Yes, very common in some highly inbred families. That is some thing I look down on and will cull every thing bred from it from the breeding loft. I made it a common rule for my hens to last at least 10 years and my cocks to last at least 15. It is very common to see a 20 year old cock still filling the eggs in the family of birds I am working with. I hope that holds true in future years.
It can get complicated raising these birds. Not only do they have to do it right in the air... they have to do the same in the breeding loft.

P.S. You may have a Parathypoid (probably mis spelled) problem?

QuickSpin Thats the best thing you can do is to fly him. For some reason it stimulates them. I guess it helps them physicaly mature which results into better results in the breeding loft. Believe it or not i'm breeding from birds as old as 1991 to 1993. I use to home the old breeders .Then fly them with the babies. Then put them back into the breeder with a hen who was a virgin. Or you may want to pay smoke 747 a visit. I've witness his success with this problem. My friend had a hen with the same problem and he fix it.
