i was just wondering what makes a roller roll, is it some kind of trait disease or some kind of twitching habit that cause them to roll........

I could be wrong, I often am but I think it is for the sheer joy of being able too. This ability in my mind is a controlable trait that is breed into the roller. How deep, how fast, what style all can be breed into them but they love to do it! I wish I could, anyone who has observed a spot on kit in action can tell they are having a ball, and when they land, you can see the pride in them. When I open the door that release's them for their fly, they spring out of the box with a rush, fly hard, land panting like any athlete who has preformed to their best, then trap willingly because they are home, not prisoners!

Here is what I have read from the study that was done at UC Davis back in the 70's......The researchers compared Rollers to other pigeons that fly....they checked the ear area to see if it was a balance thing...nothing different...they ruled out the epilepsy thing...because the birds could control the roll...where epilepsy is uncontrolled.....because the birds can roll when they want....and roll together...that it is not a freak retard thing or a flaw....they looked at the brain to see if there was something different.... The research that they did find...before they ran out of money...was that all the nerves behind the neck and upper back were almost double of that of a normal pigeon and that they were sensitive....there guess was that the birds would get some sort of rush out of rolling....kind of like my lab gets when I get out the hunting gear in the morning and pull up to the duck blind..she is going crazy with excitment.
So it is still unknown but from what I have read is that they have supersentitive nerves and that the birds may get a rush when they roll....when a bird rolls down..it is like any other flaw in the animal kingdom....and when they have an accident or bump...it is like any other accident...so...that is what I found.....I have been unable to find the research paper that used to be on line...I did print it..but I can't find it.....would not surprise me if the tree huggers had it removed...lol....becuase it goes against there drum beating of having retarded eplileptic pigeon.....the roll is no different then a Peacock fluffing up its tail feathers or Homer being able to find home from 600miles....it is just a wonder of nature!
We all know that they roll when they want.....For example..I flew in the wind the other day and they hardly rolled at all..why...because it sucks to roll in the wind and they shut it off.....so if they had a flaw they would roll all the time..

Ty,
I will look for it....I found it back in the day when "Ask Jeeves" was a search engine....Why do birmingham rollers roll..is what I typed in and it was like the third web page...it was a site that had other scientific data on all other animals...you know weird shit kind of stuff...the info on the rollers was the actual study....it was hard to follow in some points with all the propeller head lingo...I had to look up some of the words...LOL....and there was not a centerfold..so I was having a hard time...all joking aside..it was really good...I work at UC Davis....so I will doing some poking around and see if I can find any info in the UC Davis Library....anyway.....they totally ruled out that it was uncontrolled.
The extra nerves and super sensitive nerves in the neck and back..explains why they lock up...hell I do that too sometimes..but that is becuase of my new girlfriend..LOL

Hey Guys this is very a correct recall on this article it was published and I have read this before, I also know not where, but I do think it was done by UC DAVIS. I do know that when I was a kid in 1956 and pushed by parents to drive me to the San Fernando Valley to buy Rollers, they always said why do like those sick pigeons that can’t fly’ thus trying to avoid the trip. For years I also though the Rollers had epilepsy because many people felt they were sick. But as I got older and more observant, I realized the Rollers just like to roll, and can turn it on, or turn it off, have you ever noticed a Cock show off for his Hen after the first mating by rolling hot and fast, or fly like a racer when chased by a BOP, or account for a break of 10 to 20 bird at the same time. NOPE NOT A SICKNESS BUT A THRILL AND THEY LOVE IT. PACOS BILL
