Can anyone tell me for sure if this is a Roller? It doesn't look like one to me, but I am just a newbie. (He's one of my "pet" pigeons that someone told me was a Roller.)

I'm sorry if this is a dumb question. Just trying to determine if I should try to find him a good breeding mate or just leave him in with the pets...

heheheheh, "dumb" like a fox. LOL

You REALLY want to know if it is a roller? Breed it and find out if it passes on the roll to its offspring.

You want to continue breeding from it? Do the youngsters take you closer to the standard known as the "True Birmingham Roller"?

If not, why would you or anyone breed from a Roller not capable of producing birds that take you a step closer to the Ideal or standard?

Simple enough if you REALLY want to know.

Thanks guys!!!
Projeck, yeah he is a looker. But not for sale, lol.
Guess you're right Tony if I really want to find out what he is I'll have to breed him :D

I was thinking he looks kind of like a Tippler, maybe. Or a Roller-Tippler crossbreed? But something about the shape of his head and his eye color does not quite look "roller-esque" to me.

His background is a mystery. Don't know if he rolls because I've never flown him. All I know is, his name's Elvis.

run a experement, when I was a Kid I caught a bird on the beach I liked its color so I grabbed it.. It didnt have a band and it also had a clubbed foot. I took it home breed it and got some really deep pigeons,,, but of course i was like 10 and never really payed attention to quality,,,good luck with it sure looks good,, what does the band read???

Its an 07 NPA band, that's all I remember offhand.
(the other band just has my phone # on it)

Well, I may give it a shot at some point and see what happens. I'm a little hesitant to start out with mystery birds in the kit since I don't have any experience. I won't be able to tell if it's the birds or me if they're not good spinners, lol.

Don't waste your time breeding it. Tape its wings and home it to your loft. Then fly it. That should answer your question.

That bird just doesn't look like a roller to me. Settle it down and then fly it out to see if it does or does not have the goods

---------So true are those words and sometimes it is the birds that are in questions especially if you don't have a background or history about it,now remember i said sometimes.
sometimes if you don't know how to train them its you,but i rather start with a known good stock knowing where it came from and whats behind it,before i blame it or myself .many years ago i bought birds from a known breeder and didn't know he stop flying them only pedigree birds they were and i thought it was me the whole time when they didn't roll and i almost quit.lucky i didn't or i would have miss the enjoyment of these rollers .and you sound like you are serious about flying good birds so get yourself a good family to start with and good luck with your birds...

Maybe it's a showhomer crossed with something else.Birds like that are fun to have in your loft when you're starting out,but they usually end up in the little ol' ladies loft down the road who just wants to have pigeons.Check out as many pics on this site as you can and you'll get the feel of what a true roller should look like.

I have to go with Ralph on this one. It takes a lot of work to get up a good stud of rollers. Why bring in the mystery bird? Fly it fly it fly it. If it doesnt get eaten and has the goods then stock it.

i have to agree with vel..... if you dont know what it is why buy it ...if you dont know what it does fly because if the bird isnt any good your just going to waste time but if your going to breed just for the color go ahead

Check out some pics of Portugese Tumblers because that's what it looks like. The color seems to be a Cream Bar.

Pigeon,
Do yourself a favor and go read the following threads end to end. They are on the first four pages.

Is the roller pigeon a breed?
Birmingham Rollers as a breed vs color rollers
Birmingham/west of england tumblers
I was not prepared
How can I raise white bar ruby rollers?
James Turner the man the rollers the color.

After you read these articles reread this thread.
You should be able to make a decision on your own after this bit of light reading.

Give a boy a fish and he eats for one day.
Teach him how to fish and he never goes hungry.

Kenny, c'mon bro for some it isn't about anything but the bird in hand and just enjoying such.
The topics that you posted are fine for some of us,and I gotta admit fun and entertaining in a sic kind of way LOL , but they have no place in this topic.
I'm afraid that I'm going to have to moderate you and boot you to the "Mutt R us" site for 90 days as punishment, or I break one of your fingers, your choice.

Pretty simple answer to me. Fly it :) If it rolls right, it is a roller. If it tumbles, it is a Tumbler. If it kits like clue, well I see those all the time flying about at the feed mills a cross the street.

Good luck with your new pet,
Thor

Thanks all! Really appreciate everyone sharing their opinions on this one. A great learning experience for me.

For now at least, I think he'll stay with the pets. And when I get more adventurous I may try him out & see what I get. Being a beginner, It will be important to start with an established family. (even though I do not plan to compete)

Best,
~Karen
