Asking for opinions and sugestions----I am building a 3 section loft that is 5' x 12' each section. The back 1/2 is 4' x 5' enclosed. I am building nest boxes with removable fronts. My plan is to remove the fronts when the pair is on eggs. My question is how big to make the nest boxes. I am thinking 18"W-14"H-18"D. Any sugestions?

I have my nest boxes built 18"H x 18"D x 24"W. This allows me to have a shelf for a nest bowl, I can have a nest bowl of youngsters on the bottom of the box and a nest bowl of eggs on the shelf at the same time.

I have found that the dimensions of available lumber influences the size of both the loft and fittings. For example, Bill Pensom's lofts where in multiples of 5. Kit boxes 5 x 5, breeding sections 5 by 10, nest boxes 30"w x 15"d & 15"h. I believe that was becouse lumber, shiplap and tounge and grove, was availabe in 10' or 20' lengths.
When I built my first kit boxes I used plywood and 8' 2x4s.
So, two 4'x4' sections 6 1/2' high is what I built. Haveing said all that, (maybe too much), the dimensions of choice today are what you can get the most from a 4'x8' sheet of plywood, 16", 24" & 32". My current lofts are 6' deep by 4' or 8' wide.
To get back to your question, the depth and Hieght of the next boxes should allow treding in the box. 14" is probably OK but 15" to 16" is better. As for the width, remember that you will need to put two nest bowls in the nest box, 24" OK 30 or 32 "better. If you can build shelves for the nests off the floor of the box so much the better. The first hatch will not interfere with the next clutch of eggs and the pair will have more floor space.

If, I might make a suggestion to Tony... Maybe, if possible we could have a Special photo section of the guys lofts. Inside and out, so others can get some ideas on the "How Too's" of how guys house thier birds. It might make ans interesting thread for the future.
