I tell you it sure looks like these birds are smiling at me when I took this photo. Tell me they aren't a happy breed. I'm not saying what breed they are I don't want to start a debate!

LMAO Scott, we do look like idiots to the rest of the world don't we? Watching pigeons fly to the outside world has to look dorky.
Berte, the birds will slightly open thier beaks for air as they heat up or tire during flight and that appears what they may be doing......just a guess.

My neighbors think I'm crazy when they see me standing in the yard staring into the sky and talking to myself. They must really think I've lost it when my birds give me a real good break. :)

WaTtS UpP, I know exactly what you mean, only in Cali! I used to go on flys in Santa Ana and there would be like 8 or 9 guys in the street watching birds. I know the neighbors thought some gang banging was about to go down.

What a magnificently marvelous picture. Simply beautiful.
Hmm....
The birds beaks are open because while they are flying they are saying weeeee~ee~eeee..... (in pigeon language) in the air because they have so much fun flying.
But seriously though, I'm going to have to agree with Nick:
"the birds will slightly open thier beaks for air as they heat up or tire during flight"
.....but
When I go outside to feed my birds or clean their pens.... they often appear to have on their happy faces. It's as if they are smiling at me. Weird ain't it.

I live about 100 yards from the ball field behind my church, the coaches of the teams that practice there have asked me not to fly when they are practicing, the kids all stop playing and watch the birds! LOL ---------- "Semper Fi" SD

How many have been driving down the road and seen a kit flying? How many pulled over to watch the kit, honest? When I lived in SoCal I hated to go anywhere because it took so long to get there! Driving through Santa Ana, Garden Grove, Long Beach, all those little cities there were kits always flying!
