I started when I was 9 years old, all the kids in the neighborhood had pigeons, my very first birds were a trumpeter and a long face muffed tumbler named Rocky, started rollers in the early 80's after watching Bill Torres put up a kit when he was in the CRS all I remember was his back yard being real quiet with Frank Lavin judging, boy was that a long time ago, been hooked ever since! ---------- Dale SGVS http://builtforspeedrollerlofts.bravehost.com/

My father raced Racing Homers when I was growing up in Hawaii. After H.S. I joined the Marines and was stationed at MCAS El Toro, Santa Ana CA.. I got out of the Marines in 1991 and settled down in Tustin, Ca.. I had been out of birds for many years but still read the APJ religiously so I had heard of the BR but had never seen one perform. One Sat. morning I was driving through Santa Ana and saw a kit of pigeons flying. As I was driving I continued to watch the birds when several of them balled up and started dropping. I had to pull off the road before I caused an accident. I followed the kit home(a skill I learned as a kid) and knocked on the door. A Hispanic gentleman whose name I can't remember anymore, answered the door and invited me into the backyard to check out the birds. Two weeks later I had a kit box and my first BR's.

My first Rollers came from a person named Bob Price back in the mid 70's. I was lucky to have stumbled upon his home and loft a couple of blocks from where my house was. I didn't know anything about Rollers but he was friendy enough to show me around and tell me all about them. He also was thinking at that time of getting out of the hobby for he only had one lung. He offered me all the birds & a large kit box for free. And sold me a copy of the "Pigeon" for about $35.

2nd grade,a pair of commie youngsters fell out of a tree. I have been hooked ever sense, and like Donny, a very fine gentelman (William Berry) helped me along my path. He is gone now but his legacy lives in me, Donny, and countless others.

I use to catch commies in the apartments I lived in " The Klingerman apartments in El Monte".
Then when I started working at age 8( Car wash and shineing shoes) I was able to buy some Birds at Wese's pet shop in El Monte for 5 dollers a piece .
I bought my first Roller there it was a Red badge with a NBRC Band.
I use to come home from school and hurry up to the roof let the Birds out and he would go up and put on a show.
I never told any adults about what the Bird would do (spin ) because I didnt want people to think I was on Drugs.LOL
