It was back in the nineteen fiftees that I was first introduced to these colors in rollers. I met Walt Faria and Joe Pelleteir at the California Pigeon Club Annual Show held in Pleasanton, California. They exhibited Gold Wing, Bronze Wing, and Brown Wing Rollers. I asked them how they bred Brown Wing Rollers and they said they mated a brown Domestic Flight Highfyer with their rollers. Brown is a recessive mutation to wild type. The gene producing blue-black changed in a different manner and produced a new effect. Brown rollers are normal down in the nest and dun rollers are short down in the nest. The very best color for brown is choclate and dun gun-metal bluish-brown. Then Walt said he bred yellow recessive rollers with pale (pd, e//e) a beautifull phenotype called "gold'. This helped Walt to breed Gold Wing rollers and his Bronze Wing rollers were bred from Roller bronze (KR) and Tippler bronze (KT) the bronze of all late Roller imports to this country. Joe Pelleteri said Walt Faria started breeding and flying rollers in the 1930's in the bay area of Oakland, California. Joe Pelleteir started breeding and flying rollers during that time and remains breeding that same family. Joe and Walt said their was a man named Henry that moved to Oakland from back East in the 1930's Henry brought a stud of rollers from back East that were different than the rollers Bill Pensom imported to the USA. Elmer Smith told me he his stock of rollers were purchased in Oakland during that period. I believe his stock came from the old Henry roller stock from back East. They didnt look like any of the stock Bill Pensom possesed whatsoever. I still have some of the Elmer Smith stock and the rest are scattered all over the United States. Reminising, Ray Sanchez.

Ray, Thanks for providing all the info on the bronze wing Rollers. Not sure if you remember me, I'm from Orange County in CA.(Randy Beltran) Back in 2000, bought a couple of pairs from you and this Black W/F pair that was included, throws bronze wing Rollers regularly. The only problem with them is, when the eggs hatch, the hen and will not take of the babies. This has been going on for 2 years now, I just give their eggs to foster birds. These bronze wing Rollers have frequency, style, and good depth. They are a pleasure to work with. Hope everything has been going good for you Ray and hope to hear from you soon. Randy
