I would try putting it in the cup (bowl)! Sometimes it works,... sometimes! Do you have nesting material in there? Is it a first time hen?
If not, you can make a nest on the bottom of the pen by using to bricks in the corner or two blocks of wood that make a square! Add a little nesting material and they will usually adapt! It doesn't take anything fancy!
Good luck ---------- Val

Sometimes the hen will take it. Sometimes they will abandon it. I had a pair of fosters that abandon the egg I moved and the next egg. She laid another round. I had a pair of white Orientals do the same thing so I just fostered thiers.

Sometimes it takes a round for their instincts to kick in! She has an urge most likely, thats why she is staying close! A good hen won't set on them until the second egg is laid anyways. That way, the first egg won't hatch way before the second!
I would say to wait until the second egg is laid and see how she acts! If she doesn't get it after that, I would throw that round out and she will lay again in a couple of weeks!
She will catch on! ---------- Val

If she is a first timer, I would give her about 5-6 days to set them, and then I would take a small flashlight out at night and hold the eggs up one at a time with the flashlight under them. If you get them just right, you can see if there are any blood veins showing! If not, they are probably no good! Saves you and her a lot of waisted time!
Sometimes the first round just doesn't go right. She obviously has a good idea of what to do now and I bet the next round will be good!
I still check every round from every hen and they are all 2-5 yrs old! I hate for a hen to set 3 weeks for nothing! ---------- Val
