NOW I GOT RID OF ALL THOSE BIRD'S AND STARTED WITH A FEW NEW BIRD'S THAT I SAW ROLLING AT A VERY GOOD FRIEND THAT'S ALSO VERY COMPETITIVE ! ANY SUGGESTION'S ?

The best advise is to go and see the most fly's as you can to see the ones that you like the best. And don't buy birds from the first person that you see. There are too many guys that have good birds and that will help you out. First you need to show them that you are ready.
You also need to go more than twice to see the same birds as sometimes they might do bad and sometimes do good. Ask the breeder questions as some birds are easy to work and some are not.
Don't buy birds from every where you go as it's best to have one strain or two the most. ---------- SALAS LOFT

If you have birds from a friend that already flys good birds and you have some of them in your loft, why would you ask this question?
If the birds are what you say they are, then you have everything you need to develop your own line of birds with the attributes that caused you to say the were good birds in the first place.
What you really want to know is there a sure fire way to not have to work at this but yet have the very best birds possible.
The answer is: no ---------- FLY ON! Tony Chavarria

THANKS FOR THE REPLY ! WHY I ASKED THIS QUESTION IS BECAUSE AN OLDER BREEDER TOLD ME THAT YOU SHOULD START WITH A FEW GOOD STRAINS AND SELECT ! AND EVEN IF YOU GET A CERTAIN STRAIN THEY MIGHT NOT PERFORM THE SAME AS YOU WOULD EXPECT ? I STARTED WITH BIRDS FROM A PERSON THAT HAS WON THE WORLD CUP AND IF I WAS LUCKY THERE WOULD BE A FEW SHORT INDIVIDUAL ROLLS IN 30 MIN ? HOW DO YOU SELECT WITH THAT TYPE OF BIRDS ? THESE BIRDS IM BREEDING NOW IS A FAMILY THATS ALREADY BEEN CROSSED AND PERFORM AT THE BREEDERS HOUSE BUT WIL I BE ABBLE TO MAKE THEM EVEN BETER ? IN SOUTH AFRICA ITS DIFFICULT TO START WITH THE HOBBY CAUSE MOST PEOPLE DON'T REALLY WANT TO HELP ! BUT THERE IS A FEW GENTLEMEN THAT HAS REALLY HELPED !

GT - Do not let anyone fool you with nonsense about crosses etc. You have to breed your birds, study them and make what you want out of them. I am pretty sure the birds that you original received are probably good but there are many unanswered questions. If you have something that works now stick to it and breed your own champions.

RSA, When raising and flying rollers a lot of differant things will come into play, from what age the family comes into the roll to what or how much you feed. More or less of each seed (grain)in your feed mix will give you a differant result. Such as flying higher or lower, faster or slower, rolling on the breaks or just flying through the breaks. You will have to experiment with what you feed and how much you feed, to find what works best with the family of rollers you are working with.
Remember everyone manages their roller loft differantly. You may have to find a roller family that fits your management program.
I'm still new to rollers but this is my opinion.

If you go and visit a couple of lofts and you pick the birds from the air that you like only problem will be how to manage them.
That question will be aswer by the person selling you the birds.
The feed play's a important part in training the birds and the time they come in to the roll. This questin also will aswer the person selling you the birds.
If you are just starting with birds and have not had too much experience, obtaining too many strains will be really hard for you. As each one is on theire own world to make them work.
There are many good breeders there and you should find some really good birds but you have to pick them from the air so you have what you like.
You should not have any problems if you are training them right. If I buy birds from the champion if I don't know how to manage them I can have the worst birds. This could go the other way around with just some nice birds I can win if I learn how to manage them right.
The key is the manager and that is us. Just find the right birds.

I believe no, you have to ask the question to the breeder and you will be fine. When you buy birds ask them what they feed them when breeding, flying, and to young birds. I feed all this 3 different. And sometimes you have to do some changes depending on what you see your birds doing. That is how you become the manager and learn your birds. Now if you have too many strains it will be hard for some if they don't work together. Some families do work and act line if you have just one.

gt, If the person that you got your original birds from won the World Cup, then I would question why they were not rolling for you. I would have started by looking at management.
How are you feeding them? (Sounds like too high of protein to me). How old were they? How many times per week are you flying them?
If you got your new birds from a friend, you should be able to mimic his management style and get the most from your birds Good luck with them

Without asking the breeder about management the birds, here are a few basic tips that might help you: feed your birds about one table spoon per bird. That is about one measuring cup per 10 birds. Fly them on a consistent basis until they start to spin then fly them once every three days. Regulate the feed by cutting down or giving more to fly for you for about 45 min. Start with wheat and Milo mix 50/50. Give more Milo than wheat when you want them to start hovering on the turns and give more wheat when their performances start to look sluggish. Once a weak give them grains that contains lots of protein such as peas on their days of rest.
Once your birds start to perform (Spinning) and it doesn’t matter if together or individuals then we will talk about the Yo-Yo feeding method to help you get them to where you want them in performance.

You can't buy a winning kit. You have coach; train; and manage your loft(s) to get a winning kit. I wish it was as easy as simply buying a good kit of birds; I would simply buy 20 of Aubrey Thibodeaux's or Rich Hayes' birds and live happly ever after.

gtloft,
I am not sure who you are as GT Lofts use to be Gerrit Cilliers and Tom Du Toit.
I think I know the birds you started with, I have seen them at your dads house in Heidelberg. If I am correct.
I would love you to meet you and show you around our area. There are some awesome birds and I am sure you will find someone who would love to help you. We need people like you to grow our sport.

No , Ive heard of a Benny Herbst that use to have good rollers but unfortunately were not family . I stay in Jhb and I got rid of all my old birds that i battled with for a while ( I couldn't manage that strain!) and I've started to get a few new birds and my favourite cock looks like it has a GT Stripe in its tail and so I just used that name and trying to Breed out of it !
It wil be great to meet you as Ive heard a great deal about your exelent rollers and great management !

g you keep saying strains you are getting yourself confused listen to the responses any strain requires attention and time i can give you 5 lines of familys from champions what they are saying you have to still train raise fly and sort through what you want in your loft or not it takes time to learn a family of birds if you got your birds from a guy that has good birds stick with them and work with him and since you live so far away i know its hard to find good bird just dont get caught up in strains its a personal opinion of who has the best birds and strain just like buying a car or a house buy what you like drive if it dont go fast enough go buy another one trade it in you will do good dont get confused
