Because if just breed with one person's pigeons and you fly a good or bad kit on comp day , everybody refers to it as the "blacks" of so and so !

Nobody says your family is flying good they always say the ""blacks" of who-ever flew good at your house !

And you always get certain people ( especially when your new and your battling to get a roller ! ) that always refer to your birds as someone elses family !

Thats why I'm trying to buy birds out of the air and not worring to much of famillies and rather using good rollers and trying to be competitive !

Thanx Clive

Trust me, they evolve into yours over time, for that matter nothing with these birds is done fast, as it is you are looking to cross for no sound reason.

Clive,

It can be done easily but it will take around 4 to 5 years. When purchasing birds from fanciers from air also handle the birds. They must fit right in your hand. All the birds from all fianciers you are getting birds from must be compatible from character and way of feeding to performace. Don't worry about the gene pool is going to be all over the place because all top fanciers these days have their families devoid of major faults.

Once you have several excellent birds from different families then match each hen to each cock and breed them. Take your superior F1s and replace the weaker parent with them and continue on with your F2s and F3s. Good luck.

I am trying to start my own family of yellows. Actually, I have already started... The thing is, they're not just color birds.

Clive,
Having your own family is the easy part. Being known for your family is the hard part.
It will be easier if you don't mess around with mixing up families.

Your birds will be known as "Herbst" when you consistently score well in the fly's.

I am switching to (Hanchett) birds. They may be based on Bruce Cooper birds, but Ivan has been working "successfully" with them long enough to refer to them as "Hanchett's).
Some day I would like people to come to me for my "Maxwell" birds, but that is years in the future.

Pick the family of birds that works best for you and stick with them. The rest of the roller community will let you know when you have your own family.
They will let you know by trying to by birds from you.

Good luck with your birds
