Nowadays, I don't travel far any more because the price of the gas going up. I think that if this issue continue in the future the hobby will be less interest. because people don't travel to place to watch pigeon fly. In my area i notice that there are not many people show up during the club fly. DO you think gas price effect our hobby??? andrew

Andrew,
Unfortunately it is going to affect almost every thing let alone our rollers.
I just wish we could see the light at the end of the tunnel; however, at this point and time there is none.
Congress needs to get the EPA off their arse and start approving new drilling sites with in the US and AK, refineries, etc. Stop tying our hands...

I work for a very large oil company.
The refineries in this country, are at 95% production now! We could discover the largest oil deposit ever and it would do us little good at this point!
We need refineries!!!
If we started building a refinery today, it would take 7 to 10 yrs before it would be up and running!
One more refinery wouldn't hardly make an impact either, we need several more!

Gas prices have a much bigger effect on the race guy's. Think of it as an opportunity not a detriment. Talk the race guys into flying rollers.
We spend most of our time in the back yard. No need for road work. No need to pay to have the birds taken to the release point.

Have you been to the feed shop?? Price of feed has went up and has not stopped. It also takes gas to go there. The price in dollars and cents to keep our pets is on the rise. It's just a ripple effect. When will it ever end?? Never?? Just enjoy of birds while we can afford them.

The price of Feed will make some people think about keeping Culls around or trying to make a new breed by crossing the birmingham on a ice pigeon or some other weird Project.
so it may be a blessing in disguise....as far as pigeon keeping goes....

Val, Since your in the industry maybe you can tell me why diesel is so expensive. I'm under the impression all they did was to lower the amount of sulfur. Is this right? Prices used to go up .02 to .03 at a pop, now days it's like .10 to .15 overnight. I am definitely not getting out to see friends as often as I used to. On the upside, all the time at home with my birds is starting to payoff. :/

The price of diesel is called RIPOFF. It is much cheaper to make than gasoline. It is just the oil companies getting fat off you and me.

We need to discuss travel to our fly's. I live an hour and a half from the next flier. I go down to there fly's once in awhile and then carpool. It works well. i don't have a kit now but when I do it will be tough to get the other guys to drive that far for one kit. understandably so.

I work for a pipeline company! We just move it from point A to B! We get less than 10 cents a barrell!
Its not my company thats digging in your pockets, it goes way up the chain is where I would start pointing!
The "G" has a big hand in it with the taxes also! The EPA has made it extremly expensive to get it out of the ground and refine it also! It goes a lot deeper than just the oil companies!
But I agree that it is all just a rip off! ---------- Val

It's pretty easy to see who is making all the money. The only thing that is going to stop the raping we are taking is action by the Feds.. On the other hand the last time Congress questioned the oil companies we got slapped with a "penalty" increase for having the nerve to question them. As far as club flys go, all we can do is carpool. Maybe we need to ensure that ALL our club members fly every fly. Heck if your going to drive across town to see my birds, you might as well get your moneys worth and see everyones' birds while your on my side of town. The oil companies know we will cave in and pay the price in the end.

The higher cost of gas has hurt roller competition flys. The Southwest Missouri Roller Association has flyers in three district ranging close to two hundred miles apart. The flys this year have been cancelled because of bad weather. Car pooling is the best way to travel wherever competition flys are held. It might come down where a person will only attend their own respective area to viit and compete. There are lot of places in our country where flyers live within less mileage to compete. They are very fortunate and lucky in regard to the gas prices. Ray.
