I was just wondering how long it takes for a kit to to start flying as a kit? We have a fairly new kit of young birds and have flown them as often as we can for about 3 months but they still seem to fly haphazardly. Several seem like they are kitting for a short period then they just go random. Just curious what the norm is?

If they don't kit don't fly them and don't breed them.If they are young give them a little time.If you see the same habit forming ,cull them.Don't fly with birds that are doing what you want,it could ruin them.

Most of mine will kit within the first 2 days up flying,i cant imagine flying them that long and not kitting, you might have to start by flying 3 or 4 that hapen to fly toghrther and add 1 every day.Hector Coya-SGVS

mine kit within 2 days to a week. any after that they beocme a nuisance. Try evaluating and then pulling a couple birds that may be the culprit of making the kit in disarray. Ive pulled a bird before and the problems disappeared. good luck and keep us updated.

How old are your birds when they come into the roll?
How old were they when you settled them, and they started flying?

Fly them hungry for few times and they will kit for you. Feed once a day about 1 measuring cup for 10 birds. If you pinch a little off of the cup of feed would be even better.

At 3 monthes old they should have been kitting a long time ago. All of these ideas are good and some may help you and some may not. I have always found that when I get young birds that dont want to kit and or dont want to stay in the air very long the best thing for them is to take them up the road a few hundred yards and release them. At 3 monthes old you may want to even take tem further than that. If they dont make it home all you have lost is a group of non kitters. I dont mean to sound sarcastic with that but pigeons are creatures of habbit. Good and bad habbits. Once they learn them it is very difficult to break them so you need to get them under control as quickly as you can or they wont be salvageable. JMHO. Joe

I'll add a little to waht tmcdevitt posted.
These birds are around 3 1/2 months old, a couple 5-6 months old. Started flying them around end of March. Right now there are four birds (two pair of nest mates) that kit fairly well and are doing short rolls (they are all around 3 1/2 months old). They all fly high, around 400ft +/-. There are a couple of birds around the same age that will occasionally join them, but get pulled down by the others that, at this time, are flying lower (150ft), and doing some loose kitting. There are definitely two that will be culled if they don't clean their act up!
Have cut the feed back and seeing how that is going to work.
Problem is, at this time we can't really get any flying time in due to the consistent winds and storms! Winds were between 20-40mph today and suppose to be up tomorrow with storms in the afternoon into Friday! Arrrrghhh!
