We have reduced the number of birds in the loft and have plenty of nest boxes, yet There is always a couple of pairs that insist on nesting on the floor. Figure some are just comfortable or feel safe enough to do this. Anyone else have birds that do this no matter how much you try and accomodate them?

Floor nests are often disturbed by other birds in the loft.get that pair and lock 'em in an individual.

I have the same thing and don't see it as a problem, so long as the pair and their nest don't get in the way and the eggs aren't at risk of being broken. I get a few like this each year and it's no big deal.

One advantage I've observed, is that the youngsters become independent quite quickly. They can see the older birds feeding and will come out of the nest to pick at food when they're big enough. Compare this with the ones which are put on the floor, having been bred in boxes. They're very scared to begin with and huddle together out of the way of the big birds.

Andrew,yeah,17 days and into the kitbox at 21.When they are on the floor they are sometimes fed by more than one cockbird. They won't eat the first day or 2 in the kitbox but after that it is full steam ahead. My birds are already flying when they are still squeaking.

I have only had this problem with my rollers once and i put them in a individual cage and that stopped it. My fancy breeds have been nesting on the floor this year and everything in the world has happend to them Fire ants are a big problem and snakes are drown to them also.So for me it doesnt work and i try to correct it.

To this point I haven't really had a big problem with it. Use to put the babies back up into the nest box if they fell out, but decided to leave those that are old enough to move around after noticing they were well tended to by several other cocks. Really are happy, fat little birds! LOL! Just amazes me that you do all you can to meet their needs (or so you think) and they just nest on the ground anyway. Just funny I guess. Kinda proves they will do what they please, huh? Let's me know I ain't in real control!LOL!
