I just got off the phone with my good freind Don Mcvoy who knew and lived with Bill Pensom at one time.
He said Bill had Almonds but that he never seen a qualmond on his property.
He also said he never heard Bill mention Qualmonds.

Joe Quinn discovered Qualmond which was originally called "Quins Almond" and then shortened to Qualmond. I dont remember the year but it may have been after Pensom passed.
Almonds were extremely abundant and popular until 1949 when some since passed breeders conspired to eliminate them from the breed.

Herb Sparkes is a true friend and lived right near Bill Pensom as a teenager and He never seen any almonds. Bill Pensom's record books from the 1950's until his death show no almonds either. Howard McCully in his letters state that there were no Almonds in the Pensom family. Smith records show no Almonds. Bruce Cooper has been a friend of Bill Pensom since the fifties and he said that Bill never had almonds either. Bill Patrick never seen an Almond at Bill's and on and on. These were an are gentlemen that had an intimate relationship with Bill Pensom. Lester Lehmeyer records show no Almonds, Bob Scott no Almonds, Eldon McDowell no Almonds and every other breeder of Pensom rollers of that error had no Almonds. Guys tend to forget that every one and there mom wanted Bill to have one of their birds. I am sure that some can relate to a friend wanted you to "fly something." Bill did fly birds from other people as I have stated a myriad of times to see what the other fellow was doing. This does not mean he had Almonds at all.

LaRon
Don told me Bill had some Almonds on his property at one time . He did not say they were his Family of Birds, he also told me that Bill said he never seen some of the colors of Birds here in the U.S.A. until Bill came to the U.S.A. (not rollers but Mr. Andrews show Birds)
LaRon if you are still writing a book on the Pensom Birds you may want to talk to Don Mcvoy.
He knew Bill before he came to U.S.A. and lived with Bill when he (Don) first came over here ( U.S.A.).
He worked with him at Andrews hardware and he said he went with him to numerous L.A.P.C. shows back in the day.
Don came out on the video "share the blue sky" he was interviewed and asked some questions about Bill Pensom.

When I was very young it seemed that everyone was flying almonds in thier kits, but I see very few now making the kitboxes. Somehow they become in disfavor; would anybody give reason why?

Nick the almonds were fairly well eliminated in 1949 by the show people who couldnt lick em and didnt want to join em.
In Search of Those Fabulous Whittinghams by Joe Quinn and Steve Roth has the original letters to this effect in the book.
Why someone would want to do this is beyond me but we humans are sometimes a devious sort.

They were the Birminghams, Scott. These letters are just part of the history. Whitts and Birms werent considered two different lines then. Wolverhampton where the Whittinghams lived is in the Black Country and only one eight inch apart on my map.LOL Really just a few miles apart. Whits and Pensoms were all Black Country Rollers. Americans made them different.

I'm not so sure about that Paul, could be,were they mainstream in the UK or was he just a merchant ? The reason I ask is that they were never known for quality,at least not over here,so I assume the same held true over there. What do the English have to say about this, surely they must know ? ---------- Just my Opinion Scott
