Hey when I let my rollers out, they (mostly the young ones) walk around and peck at the soil/grass and sometimes I see them swallowing things. Can they get really sick from this and get diseases? ---------- Andrew

Mines does that too...but then they seem okay with it...so I just let them wonder around at times but I dont let them stay there too long on the floor/grass.

Andrew they are just doing what comes natural to them. But if you let them on the dirt much you will need to worm them twice a year. That is if you have worms that far north. We have loads of em down in Florida.

Sippi is right if you let them eat on the ground worm them more oftem,i do it every six month when i let them hang in the pen i have then in they look for certain minerals in the ground that they like or need.but not outside the pen because i keep the ground in the pen clean always washing or spraying clorox to disinfect ..I heard one time Monty lost a kit of birds from eating on the ground he never did that again.. ---------- Ralph

I don't let my birds hang out on the ground because of worms and the possibility of them finding spilled feed. The feed can be spoiled and they start wanting to feed on the ground instead of trapping. Also if you fertilize your yard they can injest the fertilizer.
