I was sitting here reading the post on pairings and it dawned on me that my best performers are all hens.

Do any of you have families that the better birds are hens or cocks or are they mixed.

I was thinking of next years pairings and by following my best to best I have to take a lesser mate due to the top four birds in the loft are hens then comes a cock. So in reality I will be breeding best to fifth best.

It is known in this sport that it is hard to get excellent performer cocks in great numbers. Some of us have them but yet some of us just breed good hen performers. To me, with all due respect, good performer hens come a dime a dozen. That is why I am against flying kits based on same sex. Once you loose a kit of good cocks to overfly, you will not find a rock big enough to crawl under to swallow your tears. In my family of birds, I need to keep an eye on hens because they are the main culprit of taking the kit up high to meet the stars. So I weed them accordingly no matter how excellent performers they are. The last thing I want is have any of them in my breeder loft to eliminate making more of them.

LOL.That was harsh.
I have had some terrific cock birds over the years but the ones that have always stood out the most were the ones that really didnt show they were a cock till they were stocked. Very easy to manage and full of roll. The ones I dont tolerate are the ones that chase the hens. They dont last long. Some of my best kits were 50/50 mix's. Joe

I have a tendency to lean toward sex divided kits. Just for the ease of handling more than anything. I think I can get more out of a kit of same sex birds without worrying about hens coming down early because they want to mate or cocks driving them down. Either one is a nuisance and easily avoided. I have flown mixed kits that were housed differently but prefer same sex kits.

This is a cock bird I flew back in 03 and he was the best spinner I have seen to date. Hen or cock. Funny thing about this bird. I put him in the show recently at the NCRC annual picnic and the judge didnt even pick him up. This was the first time in probably 15 years I have put a bird in a show cage to be judged and I did it just to prove to myself that a judge cant tell a performer in a cage. I cant say what the other birds entered did but they very well could have been great birds also but this bird was exceptional in the air. Joe

Hello Everyone
I guess your right good hens are easier to come by. I tend to get more good hens than cocks. Your always learning something here :)Thanks
