Who’s changing their family of birds in the near future, and who’s staying with what they have for the long run? What made you come to this conclusion?

Not me! I see improvement all the time in my birds! Gonna keep "circling the wagons" for a couple more years!
I bred around 75 birds this year, now its just a matter of time till the cream rises! I will compare notes to last year and narrow it down again! ---------- Val

Rollerman.....Its funny that your bring this question up.....lol. For the past several weeks I have been contemplating making a change. I have Hardesty/Roe birds for the past 4yrs now. Not too deep, the velocity could stand to be a bit better and the COLOR factor may be setting in. Not many of the basic colors here. But, its still circling around in my mind......excuse the pun...lol ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

Rollerman...Back in the spring of 2004,I went to my first ever fly here in Ohio. I saw them fly, but at the time I didn't really know how to pick birds. They looked really good compared to the families the other guys were flying. So,the guy that had the Hardesty/Roe birds offered to set me up with 12 birds.. And thats how it all came about.

I am just starting, and feel that I have started with some good birds. (Thanks Bert, Brain Middaugh, etc) Will I change them latter? Who knows for sure. However I don't think that I could get stock that is to much better, and if they get screwed up it will be because of my management not because I got bad birds. I have been lucky to have two families, one with color for fun and one for performance. I have all that I could ask for. I may look for a bird close to my family to add something, more than look at getting rid of the lot and starting new. JMO ---------- RT Williams

Hey all,
Well...I am keeping what I have. I am very happy with my results and they are really starting to move in the direction that I want. I fly Ruby Rollers/Mort Emami birds. Morts birds are a mix of Higgins, Jay Starley, Scott Campbell(Utah)...and I think a little of Guil Rand. Mort started the mixing back in 1989 to develop his family of birds...Mort has been out of flying in comp or basically flying at all due to the Falcons that take 8 to 10 birds a fly.
I started out with A LOT of families and weeded them down to these two strains. I started crossing them a number of years ago with some test pairs and LOVED the results...this year everything is crossed except a pair or two and I have already moved 3 from my first round to the A-team.
I have some birds that were from my first crosses that were flown out and put in the stock loft and they have proved themselves too...I DO NOT BELIEVE in the myth that crosses can't reproduce..that is a crock....
I wrote and article called "Starting Out" and it is basically what I did when I started and how I did it...so check it out...I put a link below.

Pure roller I have two families Plona/Smith and Herb Sparks. Even tough I have birds from to good sources, I still get the urge to buy birds from time to time, but tell my self I don’t need them. After all these years I’ve come to the conclusion that there is no gold to be found in chasing another person’s rainbow. As long as you know you have something good, you just need to keep breeding till you find those gold nuggets in the gene pool.

took me too long to build this family(18 yrs). I stickin with these for a good while. I would not get a new family anyway, I would just add what is needed and keep movin forward. They've been workin for me.

I like my birds. They show me nice deep rolls and a lot of HEAT in a few pairs.
...however
I wouldn't mind adding some of that SMOKE+STEAM to my family in order to simmer the HEAT.

I am happy with mine. There is no magical recipe to succeed. You can change to a new family but it doesn’t mean you will succeed with them. They might get ruined the same. Sometimes we need to look at ourselves, the managers, and determine what needs to change to make a lousy family shine. You have to develop an eye, a feel and sound breeding methods, and sound flying habits to make it.
Sometimes, not having enough good performers in a kit would give you the elusion that the family you are working with sucks. However, if you can muster all 20 performing birds at in a kit would give you a solid ground to work with them. Even if the performers are 5 footers spin. Without going in details, having stiffs in the kit, or birds fly above the kit, or birds that keep trailing the kit will hurt your kit training and will create you problems. Eliminate the problem birds first then make a judgment.

Windjammer Thanks for sharing, if you would have said they had the velocity but lacked depth, I would told you to stick it out and wait for the depth. Get a second opinion, before you start over, you expectations might be a little to high, some times we envision birds that roll beyond their natural capability. I hope you find what you’re looking for, and are able to build on what you find.

Keeping what I have now this family of birds has a lot of roll and the best part about them is that they love to roll, I am going on 10 years with this family. And like Smoke said if I needed anything I would add to my current family of birds. I got rid of the whole last strain I had do to percentages they were just to low. ---------- Sal Ortiz

It more comes out of the right particular birds than what family, but the goods have to be there. You can't buy a family, you have to build it,and it takes time and is a long but rewarding process, some just can't do it and these are the guys that just keep jumping around. ---------- Just my Opinion Scott

The bottom line is,,most of the time ,it's not the birds that dont work right for the breeder,it's the breeder that dont work right for the bird's.

George, when you started this creation did you use the frillbacks that were actually performance bred?
I hope so, cause you wouldn't want to pollute the gene pool with a non-performing frillback. LOL

As you know it is documented sevaral Dacades ago that the Birmingham Roller was created by mixing any and all Performing Breeds .
In order for my creation to be called Birmingham rollers I had to use the Performing Frill Back.
my referance book on this project was Timothy Leary,s " Turn on, Tune in ,drop out"
So this Project was conducted useing scientific methods.

George, as long as it was done in a scientific way then you have definitely done the breed a favor and moved it forward another notch...LOL Rich Hayes doesn't stand a chance now!!
