I think I recal "Parker" flying his W.C kit on scratch... just wonder if any else herd the same thing, or has used this on ther kit's ,,,Thanx for your time..

Booker we have a "Three Grain Scratch" down here in Florida that I have used before and would again but it is higher than wheat and milo. I feed it to my chickens. It is milo, wheat, and crack corn. I dont use it on my kits because of the corn. I dont know if they could take the heat of the corn in the summer very well here. I would use it again in the winter and cant tell any difference as far as the work rate of the birds. There are some brands that are made of cheaper mixes that I wouldnt use.

I've always considered chicken scratch pure junk. My pigeons never touched the cracked corn. I heard that once the corn is cracked it will lose it's protein value and also it scratches the bird's throat. Sometimes birds will have a second sence in what is benificial for them or their young. The same goes for spoiled or contaminated grain. They will know before you do and you will soon figure out why they aren't eating some particular grain out of a mixed bag of feed.

I have read that back in the day the old time flyers fed what ever they could get their hands on, we are really lucky to be able to buy different protein mixes. I have heard that the cracked corn will scratch their throat. I used to feed some scratch that was coated with a thin coating of veg oil, but I found out my birds work best on straight wheat. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

Every here and there I might give a little scratch to my birds and fly them the next day and they will do good but, I would not feed them just scratch trash in trash out.

You are right about the horses, I am a jackpot team roper, and the cost of hay and gas makes it hard to want to go play. Pigeons are cheap. ---------- They gotta Spin to win.....Jay

The biggest problem that I have come accross with scratch is if you let any moisture get to it it will mildew and cause sour crop. I have had this happen to me personally and thus made the decission a long time ago to just stay away from it. JMHO. the best thing to do is keep and breed your birds on the same diet changing caloric intake and protiens throws the birds off balance if you get birds from a good breeder and flyer use the same diet ive been watching these guys fly for the last year almost every weekend it is easy to get the wrong advice and mess up the birds diet consult with the guy you got um from and if you have 20 different bred birds in your kit from different breeders is hard to balance out what they function best on just my opinion

WOW,, yesterday I flew my 2 team and they flew tighter than I have ever seen ,,,!!! they also flew to a dot.. however they were one big dot.. it was un real.... the birds were flying like they were all attached at the wing...at one point the flew a tight circle about fifty feet in diamiter... then the would break and switch directions and break agian.. they were flying way faster than regular... But they were working just as fast... it was like they were sometimes caught between two invisible wall's CRAZY.. They flew for about a hour... I know this much I have never seen anything like it...it was almost like sencronized swimming my neibhor was telling me.... Ill keep you folks up to date...and thanx for your time...

I flew them agian today along with my 1 team and they were awsom... and really thats what matters... the only bummer is my dog snached one of my birds as soon as i letum out of the box... I was PISSED>>> he didnt hurt it so we were pretti luckie... he is still young...

I have raised birds on scratch almost entirely. One thing for certain, Kel & JMUrbon are right about mildew. You have to keep cracked corn dry & out of any humidity, scratch will mildew quickly in humid areas. In our humid months I don't keep the feed out of doors. I live in arid Arizona so there's little problem with humidity.
A couple of drops of iodine in the water a couple of times a month help with any issue with canker.
