I have mine on 28% pellets. Had them on 16% grain and it was okay but the pellets are much better. Young are always fed good.

I have asked of a lot of people and one hasnt answered with a definite answer yet.
How much protien is too much??
There is a limit to what most animals can digest and the rest is wasted. The consensus on pigeons is that they cant digest more than twenty two to twenty three percent. I have yet to get difinitive proof of this but sounds about right to me. You can poison them with too much protien. But too much is well above the twenty two percent mark. I have wanted to know what is too much. Even dogs can get too much as some people have poisoned "Foo-foo" with too high protien diet. I can get thirty eight percent cat fish food but I guess it would be too much or even a waste. We used to feed it to game cocks to bring up the protien of the mix. They loved it. I would expect that twenty eight percent is pushing the threshold though.

Scott What problems arise in the feathers from to much protein? Just wondering what to look for. I am feeding 14%, so not a concern just trying to learn. Thank you

J it is just a curiosity thing with me to want to know how much protien can the pigeon physically synthesize. There is data on dogs, cows, pigs and other livestock. The research may have not been done yet. I do not know. And have to yet find out. But if you know this threshhold then you can feed to the max and know that you are doing all that you can do. If you dont know the max then you could be just wasting money and feed.

Sippi, when I used to work my dogs I gave them the 30% to 32% protien feed. It sure made a difference in their preformance. It seemed to give them quite abit of energy and stamina in their work. As for the birds,I can see a big difference when I feed the 16%,over the 12%. And as for the pellets, mine get 22% ---------- Fly High and Roll On Paul

Paul are the 22% pigeon pellets or chicken layer pellets. They make a game bird that is 28% but again I dont know where the threshhold is.

Sippi I think you are right.because excess proteins is a waste of money because if it is not utilized by the body as a building process or repairing the muscle it will be excreted or store as fat. I think anything under 9 percent the pigeon be in trouble .breeders need lots of proteins the hen lays eggs and pigeons producing crop milk need a high protein diet. I say 20 percent is good enough and I think in a safe zone..---------- Ralph
