I went out this morning at 6:30 to find a bird sitting on the loft. I knew it was one of mine so I opened the trap and the bird went right in, I thought it was one that stayed out over night. When I returned later to feed I found that the bird that trapped was one that had been missing for a while, around 2 months. The bird still had all the bands I use(club, personal). It also had the plastic color band I use for kits. I'm glad to get this one back because it was a pretty nice kit pigoen. The bird came back in great shape but that only means that someone didn't make any effort to make a call.I flew a young kit and released this bird to fly with them and the bird flew the time which means someone has been flying the bird and it hasn't been sitting in the loft getting out of shape.
If a person was to find a wallet or purse in front of their home or even on their property with ID in it would they have the right to keep It? or would that be theft? If you found a car sitting front of your house with the keys in it, because you found it does it make it yours? or would it be theft? So what's the difference if a person keeps a pigeon that has someone's name and number on it? It's theft just as the other two would be.
If I get a stray I'll call the person ASAP and give some time to come get their bird.If they don't come and get the bird it's released or culled. I don't care how well the bird rolls or spins it's out of my yard.If you have to keep strays then you have to question your own program.

I once took my dog running and here came along another dog chasing us. This dog was a nice looking dog and didnt wanna depart from us. I went down the nieborhood asking niebors if they knew whos dogs it was. After a couple hrs nobody knew whos dog it was so i came home with the dog. I kept the dog sat. sun.mon..and called SPCA tuesday to see if someone had reported the dog. They said Yes somebody is looking for the dog and gave me there number. It came out the dog belonged to a little girl who had been crying for her dog. The dog also had a 300 dollar reward...lol... It was the grestest feeling returning what was not mine and the pleasure to know i did the right thing. The girl got her dog... i got my 300 for feed money .....lmao .....end of story

thats not true rollinfever. it depends on the circumstances in which the bird/s were lost and the length of time you've been flying them.

John, ive read a few article about the flyers in England doing this to each other on purpose in the evolution of the breed, keeping a stray and not trying to return it to its owner is wrong no matter how you look at it. I have strayrd in racing homers over the years and no one wants them back but i do find the owners to let them no i have the birds most leave on their own but some have to be taken off.

thats myy personal experience..i had a roller that was homed for about 6 months and one day it decides to fly away off to nowhere..didn't comeback until almost 4 weeks later..when it came back i clearly saw that the flight feathers had been taken off my somebody who was experience with pigeons..and to this day it has done that so many times that i just (removed it from my stock)...i know that everyone wants the best roller in there family but why waste time with those overfly/strays when you could spend that time breeding and observing the best that you have??? you tell me...

On a happier note, last thursday I lost a Yb when a storm came up. On friday a lady called to say she had my bird.
When I asked to make arrangements to pick it up she asked where I lived (40 minute drive) and she said she would be here within the hour! When she delivered the bird she had her 5 year old son with her who only wanted to pet the pretty bird.So after he got to hold the bird I offered mom some gas money which she refused.I then asked her son if he had a piggy bank to which he replied yes,so I gave him $10. Every body left with a smile.

This is a good forum no doubt about that don't judge the whole forum just because one guy doesn't agree with you.
you made your point that you clearly said you would give the bird back thats why if you notice everybody in the forum didn't come at you.some people do respect what you think.

Bman that was kool not too many people out here like that lady
which would take you the bird back, and what you did was good too..peace..

Rollinfever relax this is a discussion not everyone will agree with you most of the time.

Understand if a bird is strayed in (especially with a personalized band) the most logical thing to do is to contact the owner. The bird may have been chased away by a bop, the weather, etc. who knows? The owner should be the one to decide whether they want the bird back or not.

If you contact the owner and he or she doesn’t want the bird back then you’ll know that bird is no good anyway.

lol I don’t know gentlemen it sounds more like someone has a guilty conscience. j/k

Rollinfever i aint trippin , i Just wanted to make sure we were all on the same page trying to reach the owner of the bird cause were roller family so we simply gotta respect each other like family. If my brother accidently drops a 10 dollar bill and he doesnt realize it. For me to put it in my pocket is thief so i will do the right thing and return it to him.

I have lost many birds this year due for them been young birds as well as a over fly. I would like to get a phone call and see how they are doing some were birds that I was trying out from new pairs. There is just one that I would of want back as it was my breeder. All this birds have personal bands and I have not got a single call.

I don't know how any one would want to breed them if they don't know what is behind them. It takes time to breed and to match a pair and if they don't know what it has it might take them 1 year back or even more off there time by breeding this birds.

I have caught a couple of nice birds that roll good as soon as I stray them I call the owner to pick them up. When ever I would like to get a bird from them I'm sure that they will be happy to help me out even giving me a better bird or a pair.

When you have a complete kit and you remove one bird it makes a big impact on the whole team.

By just calling the owner and telling him that you stray one of there birds you gain a lot of respect by him. You never know if that particular bird is his foundation and means a lot having the bird back. He will give a couple of good birds out of him that will help you out more than just 1 bird. You also will know how to manage those birds more than by just breeding him with everything.

AN OVERFLY IS NOT A FLAW.....it is 100% pure bad luck plain and simple.....or it is a knuckle head manager...and I have been a knuckle head in my time once or twice...but you learn your lessons. It is not the birds fault..

If someone has a bird in there loft with my personalized band and I was missing it...they have some explaining to do!!

rock and ROLL

My opinions also Paul. Rarely does a bird get lost without having some sort of reason. These birds are naturally homing pigeons as all pigeons are. The weather, BOP and age are usually the only reasons a bird will get lost. That being said it is also rare that a bird will live very long in the wild due to lack of abilty to find food and water and also the diseases that wild pigeons carry that they are immune to that will kill our birds.
