As a fairly new rollerman I have been constantly told to buy, breed,n keep rollers based on their roll n not by the way they look...yet all the times that I have been to shows, they judge the birds by the way they look...so wats the deal???for all we kno the bird that gets voted grand champ could be the crappiest roller...

You will find that birds in a show do not need to roll. I personally don't feel that rollers belong in a show cage. That doesn't mean guys arent going to show their birds. You are attending shows and that is what they do at shows. They look for birds that they as a judge like and what they feel meets their standard for a good roller. In the air is were the truth really comes out. Some of the best looking in a show cage are culls in the air. Joe

Not a whole lot different than livestock. When I was in 4H and FFA we would be judged by our livestock on the hoof. then talk to the butcher who cut them up to find that a different animal was the best when cut up.
Shows are what looks the best not about what performs the best, has the most heart, or even does what it is breed to do.
Look at field trail dogs and show dogs. I have a lab. She looks nothing like the hunting dogs my friends have. All are AKC registered Labs. Mine is from show lines. I picked her because she is about 20 lbs smaller then field dogs. She hunts okay, but not as well as others I have seen.
Get and do what brings you enjoyment. Don't sweat the rest.

Good post Joe and RT..
The question is you want show or you want roll.me personally I want roll .you could look like Godzilla but you better roll like a True Birmingham Roller..

The Birmingham Roller is a performance breed and your desire would be to enhance that performance only. I find that when you begin to achieve a high level of performance all birds generally gravitate to a certian look and feel in the hand and the exceptions to this get more and more rare as you get more and more closer to the optimal level of performance.

A good show judge of the flying roller understands that and grades accordingly.

If performance is not your main interest I would suggest another breed maybe your calling. I would go even further and suggest that performance be your ONLY interest with the Birmingham Roller.

I have seen some ugly looking birds roll their but off speed depth and form and ugly too.. lol You also have some nice looking birds roll their but off too. I personally rather see birds in the sky perform but I enjoy going to birds shows too.

I don't like show birds ,but i don't mind going to look at a performing bird in a cage.especially when its lock out time for you guys gives a person something to do.me I rather look at them in my cage..but out there you learn a lot.so its kool.
