I had a egg that was hatching-started yesterday-I noticed today that the baby had died and its crop was full of air. Any ideas as to what is going on here?

What color were the parents? I had this for the second time in my life about 1 1/2 weeks ago.. and I knew the bird was hatching wrong and would die so I hatched it myself with a pair of needle point tweezers.. and now he is doing great! :)

scrimpscrampi,
From what I have read on this site and other pigeon sites if the young birds are too weak to get out of their own shell they probably are too weak to be a be a good bird. They need that struggle in the first day of their life to get strong. As far as the air in the crop, it they never made it out of the egg I don't think they would have much more than air in it. The parents haven't fed them anything yet so that's all that would be their is my guess.

If under normal circumstsnces, chick cant hatch out unaided, its a weakness in youngster, except on occassions eggs can have thicker shells, making it that much more difficult, due to too much calcium intake

there are a couple reasons why a chick dies while hatching. The worst case is paratyphiod. You will loose young regularly while hatching or withing a week or two after hatching. If you think you can rule out paratyphoid than it very well could be just a weak chick. Joe
