Depends who it is and how active he has been in the roller world since giving them up. It is difficult to find qualified judges who are willing to do the time; travel; sleep in other people homes; etc, etc.
Sometimes it is best not to look at mouth of a gift horse.
Usually someone who has been in rollers for a long while can pick out the best kit. The individual scores are not that important just as long as the best kit was picked. ---------- Just My Take On Things

Do what I have done in last year's Fall Fly and this year's World Cup, sit out the fly. It's tough, but sometimes it's the only way. I'm not going to participate in a joke of a fly where a member of the region, who has never judged, judges and gives the fly to his buddies, nor bringing in a judge that has never judged under our rules, and has not flown rollers in many years. What does it prove for you and your birds to compete in screwed up fly like that? For a fair competition to be put on, you need to bring in an unbiased, out-of-area judge, that has shown that he nows how to judge correctly from his previous experience as a judge.
Nick, you don't have to pick a judge just because he said yes when asked, and be happy about it. There are plenty of qualified judges out there, that don't even get asked. Your region needs to spend the money and bring these qualified judges in, or your perpetuating a scam, and it will cheapen these major flys.
It's funny how the so-called tough judges rarely get asked back, or get asked to judge anywhere else for that matter. Most of you guys would rather have the easy, judge anything that flips, judges. I know that Scott, has seen this also, and would agree.

Great post Dave. I definately think that the judge should be flying rollers to even be considered and should also be VERY familiar with the judging aspects. Just being familiar with rollers is not enough in my opinion. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

Hey Joe,
You got that right.
Did you ever notice that guys that put up the real deal are the ones that want the stricter judges? I want my birds judged by someone that follows the rules to the letter. If he does that to everyone, then I know that if anyone beats my kit, then either he had a better kit than mine, or mine did not fly up to their ability. I can live with either of those scenarios, but with a judge that doesn't know what he is doing, your kit, and other kits, can get screwed over. That should not be acceptable to any of us.

LMAO Scott,
Didn't you get dropped off on the side of highway by some of the flyers in a region that you were judging?
Or was that your wife also? LOL.
