Look at these two eggs.. The egg on the right is my roller egg and the one on the left is the egg of a small dove. Should I hatch this roller egg and see what comes out of it. It comes from some of my best birds. It is their first egg laid ever.. Will the baby ever be normal since the egg is so small?

THE ONLY REASON I AM SHOWING IT NEXT TO A DOVE EGG IS BECAUSE I JUST WANT TO SHOW YOU HOW SMALL THE ROLLER EGG ACTUALLY IS.. :)

If it is your from good birds give it a shot. I you might want to find a foster beside doves. Those doves are going to whooped after feeding the bigger pigeon for 3 weeks. But if they can handle the challenge, see what comes of the youngster.

Hey Andrew....those doves can actually take care of the roller eggs. When I was getting back into rollers a few years ago...I had a pair that just arrived for 2 days and they haven't control a nest yet so the hen layed an egg on the ground but she never cared about it. I had no other birds except my brother had a pair of ring neck doves that had just layed....he took the egg and as I knew it...the egg hatched.....and as a matter of fact...they took real good care of the baby roller until it was time to fly.....it is possible...

Yeah I would never let my dove take care of my pigeon, they are way too small.. and I wouldn't chance it.. I just wanted to know if the baby will ever grow up to be normal, because the egg is so small.. :)

Hey Andrew! I think Sippi had a miniature egg hatch and the little one turned out OK, it just had to play catch up with the normal squab. I think it is on here some where, I want to say it turned out to be an albino but I'm not sure, just remember bits and pieces.

You should hatch it. It would be still a healthy young. I have that little and big eggs before. Sometime I would have bigger eggs then usual, like the size of homer/racer's eggs.

Andrew,

I have fostered baby pigeons twice last year from ringneck doves. Prior to doing it I contacted Wilmer J Miller, a retired Iowa State professor of genetics, and the world's foremost ringneck dove expert. He advises only letting them foster one pigeon egg at a time because the baby pigeon is so much larger than a dove, he thought that most likely would not be successful with 2 pigeon eggs due to insufficient amount of food the doves can supply. I am not sure they could handle a pigeon plus a baby dove at once - perhaps. At about 2 weeks, the pigeon will be larger than the doves. Also it may outcompete the baby dove for food, unless you are willing to handfeed also. Another problem is that pigeons have an 18-day incubation period, while the doves have a 14-day incubation period. Thus, I had to leave the pigeon egg under a setting pigeon for the first 4 days, then transferred it to the doves. The problem is that as you know, the milk has to come in on time. The doves may not set on the pigeon egg much longer than 14 days, although mine will. However, even if they do continue to set on the pigeon egg, the dove egg will hatch on day 14, and they will commence to feed it milk for several days. The pigeon egg will hatch 4 days later. Will they still have enough days of milk left to feed the baby pigeon for several days more? I doubt it. By then they will be pumping partially digested grain. I am doubtful that this will work without someone starving. The most likely chance of this working in my opinion is if the pigeon egg was previously incubated under a pigeon for 4 days prior to placing both eggs under the dove pair. Even then, there may not be enough feed for both the baby dove and pigeon. The dove will likely be a casualty due to inability to compete being much smaller.

Thanks a lot guys especially Arlen! :) But I wasn't really asking if I could use my doves as fosters.. lol I was asking if I could hatch that small roller egg or if It would be demented or too small.. I just showed it next to a dove egg to show just how small it actually is.. lol :) thanks anyways..
