To day was a sad day for me. Had a few things go wrong for me today and one of the thinks that hit me was the lose of one of my Smoke747 hens that I had gotten form him. came home and she was on the floor of her cage lifeless. I quickly picked her up wishing it was not what I saw;her body was still warm but she was gone. She was the smallest of the bunch and I liked her the most. she was a very pretty red and white Grizz. Man I'm down.

New kit, don't let it get you down.It happens some time.I lost 3 birds in the last 2weeks,a ruby,Agent/Reed bird, and
a nice young blue check with nice potential. My ? is was it
some sort of illness that killed your bird? You might want to threat your whole loft with some 4n1.Tony sells some on this site.I would not take any chances.
Good luck and welcome to the site,Brian

I'm not a vet but if you've already dosed 'em with 4 n 1,why would you dose them again?Did you give them some probiotics after the 4n1,and some ACV to give their gut a flush out?

Since you said she was the smallest of the bunch, she possibly died because of being eggbound. Ask Smoke for another one. He is a good man.

I would advise you to keep your new birds sepearate for a few weeks to a month. You mentioned you didn't have this hen long. Rollers from different lofts have been exposed to different germs and one might have a strong immunity to selmonella and another Ecoli or what ever. When placed together they the ones not as strong imunity to certain germs will often come down with it. So letting your birds acclimate to your new home and rest is a good idea since moving them will stress them for a while.
Also in the future it is good not to let your good pairs go for more than three or four rounds, especially if you feed grain to breeders. If you have a hen or cock stay in the nest box fluffed up, seperate them and give them pellets to recover. You have to catch them going light in the early stages as most birds will not survive if they get too run down and are week and thin even with medication it will usually not help them. Joe Kiser visisted me once last year and he saw a hen going light on me and instructed me what to do and now I keep a watchful eye on the cocks and hens. Either one can go light if you breed in hot summer and many rounds. I also put two drops of idodine in the water for then hens this time of year when breeding. Just thought I would pass it along to you. Good luck! Bill C
