I have my first young birds, they will be three weeks on Sunday. When do you guys put your bands, on and kick them out of the nest. I have been told when the tail feathers are over an inch long, approx, 3 weeks. How do you guys decide?

RT if the bird are 3 weeks they should be close to being weaned. I get my bands on by 7 to 9 days. You need to see how big their feet are at 7 days then keep watching for a few days. The band won't go on a three week baby it's foot will be way too big. How many feathers doesn't matter about putting the bands on it's how large the feet are. When I band mine they don't have a feather on them yet. If the band doesn't go on kind of tight it will slip off. After you band them check them the next day. If it stays on for a day most likely it will stay on. I'm afraid at three weeks you will only get an open band on them.

Just remember to check them tomorrow RT. If the band comes off I think the parents carry it away. Very seldom you will find it in the nest. Most of the time on the floor somewhere. If it does come off give them another day and try again. Gee, that's like trying to put a size 7 shoe on a 10 foot. I'm glad you made it.

Andrew it is like someone throwing a beer can in your yard. It dont belong there. Every so often the parents will pull on off if it is too loose.

Andrew, your lucky these pigeons are nice to the young. I had canaries for years and the parents will pull the babies out of the nest trying to get the bands off. Once on the floor they die within hours if you don't get them back. I've never seen that with pigeons, Yet!

I usually band my birds when they are 10 days old... some times at 2 weeks if the bird is small.
