Any predictions on what the affects fires are gonna have on the BOP situation? From watching the news, it looks like a lot of habitat has been destroyed! Are they gonna move more south, stay north, move east? Is it gonna hurt the population of BOPs? Will they have to move more into the cities now, maybe fight for territory?

Just curious on what some thoughts are!

Val, it would have to be population decline for sure.

Ty, in the long term, you may be correct. Initially however I think it will cause a concentration in areas where there is food present; i.e. where people are flying pigeons.

The So Cal guys need to not fly their birds for about three months and let the bop sort themselves out. I would think that the overcrowding and limited prey would cause a natural culling to take effect...

I wouldnt think the bops'in your area would be affected by the fires unless the fires are in your area. I think its a wait and see situation. Be observant and good luck.

Hey Jay, I think there will be a ripple effect rolling down from Northern to Central down to So Cal. Everything will get pushed on like dominoes. JMO

It must be like what is happening along the mississippi, you try to save your town and it affects other towns on the river. I am going to have to be more cautious as I am just south of some of the fires, I can see the smoke from my house.

Well I really dont know the awnser to that,, But I will tell you this Ive been "up to my ass in aligators" for thirteen days now...as some of you know I am a captain with the U.S.F.S, and I have been a wildland fire fighter for about 18years now.. and this has been one the worst fire seasons Ive ever been involved in. I have been on the Sierra national forest helping with the situation here.. just east of fresno,, been on three fires so far, the one I was incharge of was in the wilderness the fuller fire.. they flew me and my 20 person crew in last week .. a little place called Hell's Half ''acre.. rightfully named...LOL It was unreal!!! the fire was burning in steep rugged terrain a place where there was no room for error.. we managed to contain the fire with alot of help from aircraft... the other good thing is I was able to catch some of the best fish of my life...LOL .. I carry a telocpic ultra light fishing rod&reel.. and my first cast was a 13inch rainbow trout.. and one about every other cast.. it's basically a servival tool.. so dont think I was just sport fishing...LOL it was a 1300ft decent to the river bottom.. chaseing fire only to return to the top a few hours later never relize how far that is when you are going down hill, it was a nice hike outta the hole with enough fish to feed my crew... it was a well needed break in our diet... I mean you can only eat so many sack lunches..as far as the B.O.P deal I will be a great canidate to see the effects as there is a 1400 acre fire in my backyard where there is alot of timber and rockey outcroppings... also prime B.O.P habbitat.. miss you folks and I will be headding home to my family and rollers tommrow...its gonna be nice sleeping in a bed..for two days then back in the sattle.... have a good one!!!!

Good story! Good luck to you and your men and thanks for putting yourselves in harm's way so others can be safe!

Let us know if you see a change in the BOP situation! I got a feeling that its gonna be bad in the rural areas of California, when they start migrating back!

I have as much respect for the CDF as I do our troops, these guys are awsome and some of this countries finest.
It wasn't an hr ago that I was watching from my front yard two tankers and a chopper working a fire a little to the north.
When you have a fire out of control blowing through brush, trees and houses and heading your way , it is pretty awsome to see CDF ground crews marching down your road like a platoon of Marines.
Be safe and thanks!

I don't think the fires are going to effect the BOP habitat simply because they live in the urban areas and the hoods.

Hey Jay, how's it going?

I believe the bop will be impacted by the current fires, its logical that bop will flee the burning areas to safer hunting grounds, (the hood and urban areas) and compete with resident bop for food and territory, the sum effect will be fewer bop overall for awhile, this will positively impact the hood and urban areas when the burned areas recover and are able to sustain the surviving bop who go back to unpopulated areas again.

As for the how much and if any impact will alleviate the concerns of the So Cal flyers remains to be seen.

BTW, the reason your other post was moderated is that we are no longer referring to roll-downs and culling on the site.

The raging California fires may have had some affect on birds that experienced an erosion of their habitat due to these infernos. I have noticed some rather unusual migrations in the sky of birds composing many different species. Keep in mind that several species of BOP will often follow migrating flocks.

....however

Most of the BOP migration south has already occurred. Each fall, hundreds of thousands of Hawks, Eagles, Ospreys and Falcons withdraw from their breeding grounds across North America and move to their wintering grounds, some as far away as South America.

A few species of BOP, like the Cooper’s Hawk for example; will remain in North America and stake out backyard bird feeders in hopes of making a meal out of an unwary bird. Saw a Cooper last week snatch a Mourning Dove over in my neighbors yard. The way I see it..., it's much better to be the predator than to be the unfortunate prey.

Hey Square; thanks for you and all the other guys fighting fire, I have one in my back yard it is only 95 % contained after all this time, about 4 miles away and you know how fast a fire can do 4 miles with the wind behind it, I was so lucky the wind was blowing away from me. Feather River Canyon HWY 70 has been closed for about 2 weeks, HWY 32 closed also.
About the BOP, I don't know how the smoke here wouldn't have affected them, I know I couldn't fly or wouldn't fly my pigeons for 2 weeks so the BOP would have had to go quite aways to find a place to eat, a place they could see the prey, and be able to breath the air.

Well Ralph the smoke is killing my lungs I'm not sending my birds up in that smoke. I like my rollers. I notice the wild birds around here are acting strange.

Tony,

Understood. But those two issues with rollers like American pie and Baseball. We cultivate the best of the breed to insure healthy rollers just like any other domestic speices.

I have seen an increase of Falcon attacks on my birds in the past six weeks. Their are now three to four pair that will not allow me to fly at anytime I believe it is due to the fires burning in California but i can't be sertain. What I am sertain about is the locking down my kit bird's in order be able to fly when the coast is clear.

I know I am not the only one out their and this is vastly becoming part of the hobby.
