I've been having a problem with my birds. Every time i fly them they do about 2 or 3 laps around my house then they fly out of site a couple of blocks the whole time theyre up and come back to land 30 to 40 min later. do any of you have the same problem? or am i doing something wrong?

Sounds just like a post I made about a month ago lionel.
My birds were doing and still sometimes do the same thing. I've tried starving them for 2 days and I've tried feeding them the night before and never made a bit of difference.
I have 2 wild flocks near by and I think mine are joining them for a while but then here they come back in about 20 to 40 minutes.
Good luck finding out what's going on because I don't have a clue.

Lionel are they young birds? If they are they will grow out of it. Atleast mine do.I have had kits do that sometimes about a mile away!!! Then start flying overhead and give me a neck ache then!!!!They will snap out of it.

George I've been feeding them 12% no corn about a table spoon and a half per bird, I sometimes have wind but I really dont think its the wind.

Sorry bert i dont really post much, I guess i must have missed it. I havent tried starving them but i have cut back on the feed and it hasnt worked. I've also tried feeding them up because they fly too low and it hasnt worked. I guess ill try starving them now. Thanks Bert

it really sucks because some of them are just starting to roll and i only get to enjoy them for the first and last couple of laps around my house.

I Breed from 5 pairs and 1 foster pair and I only have 1 kit box. Most of the kit is mixed older birds with younger birds but all are 08 birds, I dont know if that might be the reason for the behavior.

I hope they do snap out of it cause I've been thinking of getting rid of them and starting with a fresh kit but i think it might be to late in the season for that.

Thanks,

Lionel,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago...and I think I solved my problem and it could relate to yours. I think there is a (or a few) bad habit birds in your kit. 1 or 2 bad habit birds will pull the rest of the kit away. I had some early 08 birds and some mid 08 birds. What I saw was when I added 2-3 younger birds in the kit, the first few days they fly like they're lost and by doing so, drags the kit with them and then 1 or 2 older birds starts flying the route that they were drag a few days ago. Then the next thing I notice, the 1 or 2 bad birds keeps on leading them elsewhere. I noticed the bad habit birds because they always flew towards the wrong direction leading the whole kit.

What I did was I also had 2-3 unflown young birds that were still afraid to fly so when the kit looks like they were going to start wondering off, I tossed them on the roof and by doing so (with the combination of starving the rest of the kit birds) they came like they were landing. I kept on doing this and the bad habits started to go away. They stopped wondering off and I just kept using a young unflown bird to draw them back closer. I tried not flying the bad bird for days/week but when he/she flew...the bad habits started to show so I had 2 options. First cull it (but I only have like 12 birds to fly...and plus the bird had some potential and the bad habits were started by him following some young new flyers) and the other options is to try what i did...and now it is working so far for me.

Well, this was my experience and it kind of sounds like yours so I hope it helps....if not....i am sure you will find a better solution.

I think you can try what Flo did and see what happens by keeping them around will break there bad habits .usually is the cock birds that do this kind of thing take the birds far from home at least when it happen to me it was .what i did was separated the hens from the cocks and flew the hens first to see if it was the hen or cock that was causing this and sure enough it was the cocks then to find who it was i just kept adding cocks one at a time with the hens put one cock in take one out don't fly that one.take another put that one in and so and so. I found two cocks doing this a sire and son.then i didn't fly these with the birds until they straighten out .it took a long time they were the one taken them higher too,I notice they were fast eaters and ate more of the bigger grains in the mix . Hope something works out for you.

You know Lionel, I said my birds are doing the same thing but I notice here lately they are getting older and seem to be saying around a lot more. Maybe it is something to do with their age.
I thought mine had found a place where they could go eat, which is very possible since their is a wheat processing plant a block down the street with hundreds of wild pigeons living there.
Mine now seem to be just hanging around here now a lot better.

Bert
