I read here somewhere that somebody had put a baggie in with dirt in with a squeak with it's legs sticking out to the side. I tried finding that post but couldn't. Besides I tried that and the parents about beat the crap out of the bag and baby, I guess thinking it was something that was after them. Are the legs going to stay that way or will they straighten out whne they get older? Or is their something I can do like tie them together so they will be straight? The squeak is about 2 weeks getting pin feathers pretty good now.

I am sorry I had to cull one that was that age and I tried tying the legs together. You have to catch it early...

Bertie if you cant get the parents to accept the dirt bag real quick it will be over for the squeak. Lots of pine needles will eliminate that problem. The legs start slipping to the side when the squeak trys to stand. If caught quickly it is easily corrected. If not he will be permanently cripple. I have tied them with pipe cleaners but it never fully corrects the problem.

It mostly happens when there is only one in the nest, they don't have each other to push against.

I'd like to really thank all you people for helping. I thought it was something to do with him being alone and no nesting material in the nest just a pad. Yes,it's all my fault! I wrote before about the hen had laid new eggs in the same nest as the week old squeak (it's nest mate died at one day)so I thought I had to move him out. I just put a new nesting bowl and a pad in the nest and moved it. Earlier today I thought I would try putting him back in with his mother and her two eggs and she seemed real happy to have him there. I'm hoping it isn't too late. Being in with it's mother and 2 eggs his legs will straighten out I hope. Thanks again for all the advice.

Believe it or not! This squeaks legs look a lot better just after being in the nest with the mother and 2 eggs for half a day. I think it's going to work. Thanks again for all the information. I really hate losing a squeak, and it's even worse when it is my fault in the first place.

I had this happen to me just last week! I moved a youngster to the ground and the first day it got into the feed bowl. It couldn't get out and couldn't get any tracktion in the loose seed! When I found it that evening, its legs were going straight out. I made a hobble by using two clip on bands and some string. Gave him about a fingers width between the 2 bands and stuck it on him. Put him back in his nest for three days and when I checked on him, he was fixed! Been three days now and he still looks good!
Thank goodness for threads like this one, or I wouldn't of known what to do! ---------- Val

Well thanks to you people my young bird was standing this morning. I think if I had waited any longer it would of been permanent. The nest is a little crowded with the parents 2 eggs and a 2 week old but the squeak loves it and the parents don't mind it being there. I'm sure soon now it will be out of the nest and just in the box somewhere. I just went out and clicked a photo but it isn't that clear. You can see that the squeak is pretty crowded which is good for him.
