One of the things I recommend for some one that is going to start with rollers is a good Kit cage. I tell this to every one the kit cage makes a big difference. Some may think not but it does. It has to be built right to have the birds healty and to train them easy. Even with the best kit birds not flying right they will not do much.
Having a big kit cage that has plenty of room to fly inside the birds will not perform how you want them too. They already had there air time in the cage so now they will want to kick back in the wire.
Having them in a small kit cage will bring desease to the birds as they all will be too close to each other eating S?
Having a small door for 3 birds to come out is not good as some will go up and the others will not kit with the rest.

Having the kit birds and flyers together and flying them out is not good. As the breeders will land early for having food. The kit birds will want to breed and not fly.
Fly birds with the same age as early as possible.
birds that are in to the roll fly with birds that are with the roll.

Here is an old picture of one of my kitboxes! I wished it was about 6-12 inches bigger in all dementions, but that is it! I like them pretty close!
I have now changed the back set of perches to 6 instead of 9 and I will try to change the wire on the floor to a wire with larger diameter holes! ---------- Val

Just what I am doing. I built a double sided kit box. Put a divider in the middle. One side has 23 perches. I have the birds that I am flying on that side. It is kind of a pain. My young birds perform better with out the older (once breeders) birds. So I have to catch and release who I want to fly. The other side has 9 perches, and 4 nest boxes. I only have 8 birds plus squeaks on that side. I live in a dry climate and they appear fine and healthy at this time. It has worked as a starting place. Down side, I can't seperate birds, and have limited room. Also can only have 4 pairs breeding at time. This can be good because since my new birds are not breeding they might as well be flying and and I can see what they got. It has also provided me with the birds I want, and the patience (yeah right) that I need to make sure the loft I build is what I want for the long term, instead of slapping something together, and wishing I did this or that different 2 months down the road. I still haven't decided if I should build the Starter Loft at Redroselofts.com or something else. ---------- RT Williams

I think it is a bit small too, but I was taught that they will kit tighter if their housed tight! Just what I was taught! This was my first set before I was a member here and got to see all the different set ups!
I will rebuild in a year or so and I will make them maybe a foot larger in all three directions, but that is it! I like em tight!
Another important feature I will have, is a trey underneath to catch the waiste!
This set of birds are a bunch of mixes! My kiboxes have nothing but birds from my Urban family,Higgins family, and now I have some young Rubies coming up! ---------- Val

Yeah a foot should be better and that is going to be a heck of a kit with all of those families in it... ---------- Cristian Castro

I think that is a good size. If you have it like that they seem to fly tighter together. If you have it bigger they will want to breed in side.
This one is 3' all square holds 12 birds per side.
The same just a double.

My kit cages are smaller 2' deep but I don't like them because the birds don't have room to strech there wings. This are 3' deep so they have 1' extra for them to strech a little when they are in lock down of 6 months.
