Hey guys im new to the game of pigeons. I started building my first loft a couple of weeks ago and am almost finished! Just a couple of newbie questions go easy on me... -_-

1. My loft/box is roughly 4'wide X 8'long X 4.5'tall. How many birds can this hold?

2. Should I split the loft/box into half and make one side to breed and the other side to fly? And if I did do this would a 4'x4'x4' big enough for flyers and how many could it hold?

3. How many nesting boxes could I fit if I did split the loft/box in half? And how many pairs should I keep in there?

I will post some pics as soon as I upload them to my computer (:

Welcome Game! I would build a sepperate kit (flying) box! My breeder pen is about 8Lx7Wx7H and I keep around 6 pr of breeders in it! Gets to crowded and stressful for them if I have anymore than that!

Kit boxes only need to be between 3x3x3 to 4x4x4 to house around 20 birds. My next ones will be 4w x 4w x 3deep! I would build a double myself! You will want to keep your A-team seperate from your trainers!

You can start as small as you want or your budget will allow, but if you stay at it very long, you will never have enough room! LOL

I'm adding all the time!

Go back and do some research and look at other lofts and kitboxes that have been posted to get some ideas!

The loft your making should be good for your breeders. Look up kit cages and see the ones you like. The kit cages should hold around 24 birds no more. 3x3x3 is my favorite.

As for the breeders I like using individual breeding departments to be able to split the pair and change with a new mate in around 1 week. You know 100% who are the parents compare to open loft.

You have the perfect room to make a perfect setup don't rush it.

You will also need some dividers for the cock and for the hens when you are not breeding.

I wish I had your yard.

good luck

Hmmm anyway I could just split this loft up for breeders and flyers? I spent around $300 on a Milwaukee Drill and Circular Saw and so far have spent close to $400 on the rest of the supplys like wood, nails, siding and etc... and now am very low on money :x

Im very happy I bought my first circular saw and drill. This was a summer project and its coming along great :). I was scared to use the saw at first thinking I was gonna cut my fingers off or something...

*** Im located on Long Island, New York and don't have any Rollers lined up for me yet. I do know a couple of guys in my area that have Tipplers and Flights they said they would give me to start out with...

But I really want Rollers!! :P

So what do you guys think about splitting this into half? The left side for breeders and the right side for flyers??

Welcome to the site. If yo van keep the guys on task they are a wealth of info.
I would figure a way to split your loft, but not for your fliers, just as a way to seperate your pairs when you do not want them to breed. Seperate your cocks and hens in the winter, or if Hawks and the like (BOP, Birds of Prey) are a problem. You may need to stop breeding or your young will not develop like they need to, because you can't fly, unless you like feeding BOP.
Get your birds and then build a double kit box. The kit box is where you will want to put and fly you fliers out of.
If the guys you are getting your birds from will let you pick them in the air so you do need to fly them to choose your pairing, or if you trust them to help choose your pairs then, you will not need the kit boxes for 6 weeks or so, and can build those when you get a few young birds weaned.
Just my thoughts, Good luck with them and enjoy tour new hobby.
Good job constructing your loft.

Just my opinion.. very nice loft, it wouldn't hurt to have two of 'em.. maybe another 4'x4' you could build for the flyers.. I built one 4x4 loft/kit in about a week.. for only about $120.00, shingled and everything.. I think the breeders could even have the 4x8 loft.. good luck! :)

Welcome Game, Val is right , go slow it is easier to build right then to rebuild. You can always add on later. Plenty of ventilation, a little sun, clean food, clean water, and grit. Your birds will do well and prosper.

Ok I need some help on roofing now. What do I do and how is it done? Do I just..

1. Lay plywood over my base and nail it down with roofing nails.

2. Then apply the tar paper material over the roof

3. Then apply tar on top of that then place the shingles over it? I bought the shingles that just roll out...

I have never used tar on top of tar paper, but in your climate, you might need it! I have shingled several houses around here it isn't necassary!

If you do decide to split your loft in two, I would consider an avery or a fly pen on the side so they can stretch out and get some fresh air and sun often! It wouldnt be much in cost and effort, and its a good place to let them take there weekly baths and not get the loft wet!

All this information is gonna cost yu that dog! LOL

I want it!

LOL hahaha no one gets the dog ever!! My mom would kill me if anything happened to her baby >_< !

But electric man everything I wrote above is right and should I just follow that??

And at the bottom where you see the 2 big cut outs I plan on making a lil screened aviary thingy. Its not gonna be very big but will allow the birds to come out and get some fresh air and sunlight :p

Another question hope you guys don't mind. What is roofing tar exactly called??

I was at home depot today and saw all sorts of other adhesives but had no idea what kinda tar is used for shingles?? One of the employees there did show me a 5 gallon bucket of something but it was like $50-60 eeeek!!

Game, just so happens I'am a roofer. You could put shingles or 30# felt with a 90# cap sheet. You can find it at any roofing supply or home depot. You can also use metal roofing panels.

cr250 I actually have 30# felt that I used for the base of my loft and I have plenty left over!!

And earlier today I purchased a roll of cap sheet!! I guess so far im good on supplys.

Im going to borrow a nail gun and nail down the 30# felt to the roof... can you guide me after that??

How do I apply the cap sheet and etc...??

Thanks!

Iv been doing some research myself and see that I could use Bitumen to hold the sheet caps down correct??

The only thing I don't like about this idea is that its freaking $51.97 for a 5 gallon...doubt ill really need that much.

Finished the roof today but not very happy on how it came out... the important thing is that it will hold out water.

Any ideas on how to clean this up to make it look nicer??

I used a staple gun and nailed the felt down then used roofing cement and spread it all over the top then layed my sheet cap over it. I let a lot hang off the front and back so water won't drip into the loft...

Please help! (or should I just leave it as it is?)
