Hi I have one pair of solid yellows who have only raised me two young so far. They look like they both will be males.....What should i breed to them to get a better % of solid yellow young (Whites? Reds? Blacks?) next year?

Just why do you want to breed more yellows?
Because once you follow the color then you will be on a road to nowhere my friend.
I thought i knew you better Lol.

I agreed with Wayne, Tony and Thom.

Yellows and Creams are preety birds that's it. Ones you see a true performance bird nothing else comes close to it.

The best advise is to go and see the most fly's you can see some good birds fly. Then you will just want to get more of that instead of yellows or creams. I'm not saying that there are not good yellows or Creams just that what you are saying is you trying to make more of that color.

The problem is not may have seen what a true Roller is suppose to roll. and this is a Fact

If it rolls to your standard than breed it other wise remove it from your stock. But for god sake dont just pair up two birds just for the sake of getting yellows. You will certainly spiral down the quality ladder. Now all you color buffs dont think I am saying yellows dont roll because I have seen some good one I am just stating that dont pair them up just for the sake of getting more yellows. Joe

I'll help you anyways.. To breed more actual yellows like this:

You need to breed Red to Yellow.. Or yellow to yellow but they will sometimes throw a dilute back. I have experienced this, while breeding for PERFORMANCE.. lol :) If they can perform well.. then great, but If they can't do so well, than I would change my mind If I were you.. Good luck with that! :)

Andrew, a yellow is a dilute red check or bar. That's why you get yellow breeding back to red it is the dilute from the red.

You guys are great thanks for your responses much appreciated , apparently these yellows are performance birds 30 to 40 ft tight and fast(still to be proven..I will start flying their young next spring or pay a visit to the gentlemen i got them from last fall and see if he will fly some of his so i can see the type of spin)

I kind of got hung up on the yellows after a friend of the family was talking about 60-40s from the 1970s he said they called the yellows that because thats the distance they would spin

This line of yellows were brought from florida. Will try to post some pics

Thanks again

Go for the yellows! As long as they are good performing and type there is no reason not to breed for color. Some of these guys won't accept anything new if its not from some acient bloodline that only they or their buddys have. I understand keeping goodlines going, but it is not always bad to add a new blood or trait. Look at Penson birds, they are usually quite flashy marked. But his birds are legend. Doubtless he worked on getting the right traits from several lines.
I would never snub my nose at the backyard breeder with lots of color in his flock and several bloodlines. He might just come up with the bird that will out do some of the "perfect bred bloodlines"!
