2X3s for the base and 2x2s for the box. That will have plywood on the sides and the two inside ones have 1/2x1/2 welded wire.

I'm just about to build my first kit box, gonna build a double, i'd appreciate it if you kept this thread going with pics as i'm no carpenter & can base what i build on it, also if anyone else remembers any 'how to' type threads on kit box building i'd appreciate the heads up.

cheers, james.

I am with you Chubs...I have been looking throught the threads to get some ideas, but I haven't found a lot of details. Not a carpenter myself...so I am afraid of screwing up! I would love to have some good visuals or diagrams.

mkg........How do you get 4 measurements?? Usually in carpentry we just use 3. Lenght, width and the height. But Iam sure they will do just fine for your birds. Keep us posted.

Hi Rudy im doing good how have you been? Im going to keep this posting pictures as i go.I have two kit boxes now one is 3x4 the other 3x3. This new one the stalls/kit boxs are alittle smaller than the 3x3 but not by much. But my thinking is if i can make 3 kit boxes for the cost of a double why not its only a few inches. The birds spend most of there time on the perches anyways. The base has a piece of ply wood that has a 4" drop from front to back that im going th lay some linoleum down on it for easy cleaning and put a piece of 8' rain gutter and a down spout that drains in to a bucket with holes so the water can drain leaving only the crap.

Hi paul i just got a 8' 2x3 and marked it in equal sizes from end to end @ 32" and used the marks as center line where the screws go.Kind of different but it works.

3/8 plywood becouse it around 14.60 a sheet and its light. I should be posting some more pics sunday night.I put the plywood on the two end panels and the other two i put 1/2x1/2 welded wire.so air can flow to keep the heat down in side the boxes. This kit box is being made in panels so it can be taken a part if i want to move it.

Oh ok but do you know exactly what kinda plywood it is? T

There are lots of differnt kinds at home depot and for my loft I used siding material cause its weatherproof and for the base I used some OSB and then for the roof some roof sheathing type and etc...

MKG what size wire are you using for your floor? I have 1x1 and I think it is still too small i think 1x2 would be a better wire floor. Just my thought.

1x1 for the floor and 1/2x1 for the top and insides i like 1x1 becouse my neibhor has a over grown yard and a bunch of rats.I have cut them back with poison. I just didnt want one to get in the kit boxes.I also have hot and cold water on the side of my house to wash the dogs and clean the kit boxes with the hot water.

Hi Jose the masons are doing good.Im still trying two get a full kit going.Game it just takes patience i try to do alittle every day.I like building the part i dont like is painting. I pre drill the holes for the screws so the 2x2s dont crack. The cleaning part i have thought about the kit box geting messed up by cleaning the inside with hot water. But i think with primer and paint on the outside and some type of water seal inside. It wouldnt be washed out with water once a month but scraped more often.
Thanks Cristian.

Nice looking kit box. Make sure you paint it befor throwing in the birds. It will take longer and for the wood to start decaying and of course it will look better in your yard. Good work

RT Williams it will be made of plastic roofing ply wood 2x4s and 2x2s with hinges in the back. Two stands in front to keep open 1/2' when hot. I used wire on the insides top and floor to get air in the box for less dust easy cleaning with hot water. Some might say that it not good to clean with hot water but this kit box was desigened for that.I have a friend that got pigeon lung and I dont want it that's why I clean with water.
