Just a couple of questions.
1. What size wood would you guys recomend to use for a 4'L x 20''W x 2'T aviary/fly pen thingy that hang off the sides of lofts for birds to get some fresh air and sunshine?
2. My lofts 8'L x 4'W x 4.5'T. I don't have money or the time to build a seperate kitbox for flyers. Could I just split my loft into half and keep one side for flyers and one side for breeders?
Or should I give my breeders more room and split the loft at 5ft so there is only 3ft left for the flyers?

To frame your aviary you could use 2"X2"s(actually the dimensions are 1 1/2" X1 1/2" they just call em 2"X2"s)Or another real good thing to use is steel stud which is real light. ---------- Kel. Rum-30 Lofts

To answer you question on the seperation of your loft for the off season.Guys do it all the time. It works just fine. As for the framework on your aviary. The 2X2 framework works fine. I personally use the 1" welded wire and I use no framework at all. The welded wire holds itself up just fine. In fact I can hang on the corners of my aviary and they hold up. Of course you cant in the middle but I have had them up for 6 years now and there is no sagging at all and no wood to have to paint. The aviaries on the front of my loft are 3'X 3' X 12' with dividers every 4" to seperatte the lofts. The deviders are also the 1" welded wire. Chicken wire is cheap but has no structural strength to it so it will not hold its shape. Joe ---------- J.M.Urbon Lofts A Proven Family of Spinners http://www.freewebs.com/jmurbonlofts/

You would want to have a spot that you can quarentine any sick birds. Doesn't really have to be a seperate loft just a cage that you can isolate the bird from the rest like in the garage or on the other side of the yard. Just away from the rest. 1/2 at least for the floor. This will allow fecal material to fall through. I have 1/2 in mine and would go larger if I could. I still have to scape off once in a while. ---------- RT Williams

But then going larger than 1/2 don't you have to worry about mice/rats and other dangers getting through??

that all depends on just how tidy you keep your loft. If you have rats and mice in your surrounding area you are more susceptible to vermin infestation, so sweep up fallen feed and don’t keep trash, clutter around your loft and you should be fine.

Ok guys im stuck and need your help!
For my flypen/aviary so far I have a frame for the top and a frame for the bottom. Do I need to make 2 frames for the sides??
or could I get away by just using four 1/2'' x 2'' pieces of wood to stand up alone for each corner??
