jerry, do a site search on fostering. It seems like you have a total misunderstanding on the subject. Fostering is a good tool to advance your breeding program if used properly.

jnyce..that's a very bad idea..u only foster..when they have eggs only...not squabs....man..that will put so much on the foster..parents..and u will probably lose the eggs..and the two squabs..so i rather not take the chances..well good luck..and if u can find some roller guys near u..u can try to ask around..they will give u more info..on what u need to know..

just my thoughts..

Bert, I'm going to try to explain forstering as I understand it, if I'm wrong in any place hopefully someone more knowledgeable will jump in. Day 1, I mate the breeder pair and the foster pair, all birds should lay in about eight to ten days. I use my fosters as alternate breeders. In other words, they are as valuable to me as my primaries and are from my sideline of the same family. I then wait for seven days after the eggs are layed to check for fertility. If all eggs are fertile, then I choose my primaries over the secondary or foster pair. If any primary egg is not fertile then, I mark each egg with an indelible marker, and allow the fosters to raise them. The primary pair will lay in ten to twelve days, you can start the process over with additional fosters or allow the primaries to raise the next round. If the primaries are an established pair I would allow them to raise every fourth round, using three sets of fosters for one pair of primaries. Clear as mud! ;-) I hope this helps.

Thom,
This isn't my thread jerryt posted it. But I will like to see what you have to say about it anyway. I do have a few birds I am going to use as fosters and I can use all the help I can get.

Yes, but make sure that your primary pr and your foster pr have laid within about 3 days of each other! Eggs will usually hatch around the 18th day. The fosters will likely give up on the eggs if they don't hatch by the 21st or 22nd day and quit setting on them! If they hatch before the fosters set on them around 16 days, they will not be producing their "pigeon milk"! The babies need this to start off healthy!
