I had a pair I stocked for the first time this year. They were producing really good tight deep rolling birds. I was really happy with them. The last week I had some birds start having serious stability problems. Not like the normal bumper just out of the blue on a break. Three in a week. I went back to my breeding records and checked. All three came from this one pair. Needless to say they are going back into the kit box. I will switch them to new mates next year for a couple of rounds to see if either one can produce. The first round was just four months old and both are in the cull pen now. I expect the other two rounds to become unstable any time now. Without my records I could not have even come close to remembering which were which.

I was careless on a few of my 07 birds! I put the bands on and thought I could remember which was which till later. Only did this on maybe a half dozen out of 75 little ones! Now that I have flown them out, I see three birds that are probably worth putting back on their parents, but I don't know for sure who they are! I know what family they are from by their color, but not the parents! I gave all these breeders of this family away earlier this year and plan on giving him these 3 after the FF, but I feel kinda stupid now for being careless! All 3 have been flown hard since the spring of 07, and they have done well. Out of all those little ones that I kept records, the only 3 worth stocking, came from the few that I was careless with!

Words of advice: write the band #s down and the parents immediatly after you band them! Don't wait!

Sorry to hear that Val,

I hope it wasn't the family that produced the pearl eyed blacks cause those are some good birds.

Really bad. I put all the birds that dont act right in a pen and will refly them in September. I dont have high hopes though of them improving after moult.

Started building some individual breeding cages this morning. Plans are to build 16 total by the first of the year! 10 for BRs and 6 for PRs!

I don't want any cocks jumping the wrong hens! I will have more control on syncronising the fosters with the breeders going down at the same time also!

I will refly them before I cull them. But they were solid in thier screw ups, like 150'. I am surprised I even got to put them in the cull pen.

That is what I use. It works great. BUT you must be sure to back up you data. I lost my hard drive last year and only had some of the data backed up. So I have birds that I have no clue as to parentage. Now thier pedigree says unknown. I now go to my loft with my loft records book to band. I dont always get the colors because they are in pin feathers and I got tired of guessing but I always write down the band # before I put it on the squeaks. One nest at a time. It takes a little longer but I have written records if something does happen to my eletronic records again.

You have to keep records that is one of your jobs for having rollers.

Who are the parents?
When did they laid the first egg?
When did they hatch.
When was there first roll?
How deep are they?
Speed?
Frequency?
Development of the roll in till they mature.
Any bad faults they tend to have. Roll from the back.etc

This are some of the notes I do. I aslo use Power Pigeon but you have to keep a note book as well. My laptop crash and everything erase. That hurt, alot of time put in to it gone.

Power Pigeon has an easy backup system,(the full version) I keep a 3.5 floppy om my desk and redo the backup everytime I make an entry.

Thom that is a wise move. That is the bad side of the electronic age. I use my loft registers to write all the data in and then transfer it into the computer as time allows. Then I back it up on CD.
