Plywood is not the best as it is hard to clean and soaks up moisture.I use wire cages but one thing I have seen in some lofts which seems to work good is those rectangular plastic buckets with one side cut out and screw the bottom to the wall of the loft.Presto!!a nesting box.Leave a lip on the bottom so no one rolls out.sippi uses 'em in his loft maybe he'll post a picture.

That is more than plenty for the nestbox! Are you in individual breeding pens or open loft?

Here are some updated pics!

Iv added a knob and some locks to the outside.

Iv also made some simple perches that aren't nailed into the frame yet..

Today I just finished making a screen door for the left side gotta make one for the right...

You can also see the flypen im working on.

Then there is the inside of my loft. Remember the dimensions are roughly 8'L x 4'W x 4.5'T.

I was thinking about just making around 9 nest boxs along the back wall 3 going down then 3 going left to right

Nice, I have open loft and I use a 2 deep/3 wide/1 1/2 tall, it helps keeping in the nest box while they mate.

If you usa plywood , or any wood, do yourself a favor and line the boxs with something like newspapers. I`ve even used unpasted wallpaper i got real cheap. Anything to make cleaning easier and reduce the scraping you will have to do.
You`ll still have to wear a mask when cleaning either way, but with a liner in the box it`ll still look almost like new next year . And Less scraping is lots better for you and the birds. If its easier to clean you will probably do it more often.
Good lookin loft so far. Keep us posted on the progress.

Here is an updated on my nesting boxes!!

As you can see I made some of the braces holding the boards up longer on every other end so that birds can perch on them :P

Hey Game,
You coulda used MDF instead of that spendy pine. Its nice though. Go ahead and get some stain and sealer on it before you let the birds in. Newspaper works well as a liner. Makes for easy clean up and if they do wear thru it you can dampen it then wipe it up if you seal the wood first. Been using it for years. I change the paper when I clean out the nestbowls. Nice work. Finish it out with the same vigor you framed it with. Has the potential to be superb.

Would placing newspaper all over the bottom of my loft make cleaning easier??

You are going to have those newspaper flying everywhere. If you have sand then that's good because all you need to do is scrap em.

Hmm I do live very close to the beach and could get lots of sand lol....

Are there any downfalls with having sand?

Game,
That wood is too pretty to paint.Use a good exterior stain and seal it with a clearcoat of some kind.
yits

ps Dont use beach sand. It isnt clean. Use some of the bags of playsand or go to a sand and gravel company. Lots of micro-organisms in beach sand.

Plastic, put some holes at the bottom of them and they will last you a life time, just wash and re-use.

For nest boxes I take 1x3 and nail together for a 6x6 square. stick it in a corner. My birds like it. one piece 6.5 the other 6 even. nail in corner to make square box.
