I discovered a fire ant colony in my So.Cal front yard this afternoon while mowing the lawn and man were they pissed off!
All you So.Cal guys be on the lookout cause these guys are BAD NEWS. They have been known to swarm and kill animals including birds and will set up colonies inside electric boxes, under your carpeting, inside walls, air conditioners, your lawn and garden, practically anywhere. Supposedly their tunnels can go 5' under ground and can be very hard to kill the colony.

They have just about wiped out Horny Toads, rabbits, snakes, quail, and any other ground dwelling animal here in Texas.
When they bite after a day you develop little fluid filled blister at the bite site.
Amdro, a granualr insectiside works great and keeps them in check somewhat!!!!!!!

Chewy, they are red with a black tail. The tail looks like it's got a couple of stripes on it. And they've got pretty bid heads for a small ant. They're about 3-4 times bigger than our black ants and swarm like crazy when you disturb them. I ran over a small mound of dirt in my yard that was maybey 9" in diameter and sort of flat looking and they came out ready for battle. Be on the look out!
